newbie...rust question

Hello all, I purchased my childhood dream a few months ago, a 79 sc with 135k on the car with a top end rebuild 15k ago. it was a socal car so theres mostly no rust except for a deep scratch on the pass. rear fender by the po. hows the best way to tackle this so the cancer doesnt spread. i plan on getting a glass out respray in the near future, but dont want this to get out of control. thanks

Thats an odd place to just rust out. Was there a repair there at some point? Looks like a crack that started to rust?

Wire wheel or spot sand blast the area and that will tell you real quick how bad it is. The steel is pretty sturdy on these cars not like the new ones.
