VIN NUMBER HELP! Interesitng stuff

Here is the VIN WP0EB091XFS170777. Im looking at a 1985 Turbo Cabriolet with this vin number. Something wrong? I think that this VIN is just a regular 911. If I remember correctly there were no US model Turbos in 1985 not 1985 Turbo Cabriolets. Am i correct? Any advice is helpful! Thanks!

Philip - Are you sure it is ...91XFS...? All I see are ...91CFS... WPOEBO91CFS170000 starts off the US Carrera Cab VIN.

If its a factory widebody a search should reveal the appropriate M491 option code. Another give-away is that most aftermarket conversions would not go thru the expense of fitting Turbo brakes, as is proper for official Turbo-Look. Look to see if they are there.

Engine code shows 930, so I assume that the Porsche is an M491 turbo look. ?

No, "Engine code 930.21" is the engine type 930/21 normal 3.2l, 150kW, 911 Carrera USA/Japan/FRG-M298.

M491 is a chassis uprate that is the entire Turbo chassis with re-positioned suspension mounts, turbo trailing arms, axles, brakes, fenders, wheels and more.

Best,
Grady

According to the Turbo Look (TL) registry.....there supposedly were only 5 Turbo-Look cabs made for USA in 1985.

OK on having Turbo brakes, as the TL cars should have these and would take us closer to finding a factory build..... but I don't understand *at all* the reference to Turbo gauges.

As Grady points out, the 930/21 is the regular 3.2 L normally aspirated engine......and the 915 reference to the gearbox also indicates a "non-turbo" ( motor).

strange chassis number?

I am looking at an 84 M491 option 911. The chassis number is WPOABO913ES120249. It comes up invalid for Car Fax. All other chassis numbers for US CES, no #3, or ZES for other countries. Any help out there?

real, with a good Vin? I need the ok, so I can buy, and scoop some 7 & 9's that are for sale. Excuse if I am not getting it. Please explain again.

Thanks,

Stephen

PET is a porsche parts program, the 7 edition is 1 of the latest available & includes capability for interactive VIN search. it is what PNA & porsche dealers would use to handle parts orders for specific vehicles.

if you pm me i will send you a link for download so you can search VIN yourself, but i will not post it (proprietary & therefore i assume against forum rules).

cheers

I checked the M491 / M470 data base VIN lists.
There were 113 M491 Cabs produced for North America in 1985, but WP0EB091XFS170777 was not a M491 optioned car.

WPOABO913ES120249 is a valid M491 optioned car. #9 of 354 Coupes produced for North America in 1984.

For some reason, the PET data base lists some options with an I instead of a M. So I491 is the same as M491 on the options listed.
PET also only includes descriptions for the M options, so you have to look up the I option codes separately.

1984 and 85 M491 Turbo looks came with 16" Fuchs, 7x16 front, 8x16 rear.
Starting in 1986 the rears were 9x16.
