New to the 911

Hi Guys,

After many years of wanting too, i have eventually bought myself my chilhood dream car, a 1982 SC targa.

The cars in really good condition, but has a few area of concern and i was hoping you could provide some help. My Bentley and Haynes manuals are on the way to South Africa.

The car has at some time in its life been converted to EFI and is running a seperate management system. However, the car isn't running great and misses/pops in the lower rev range, seems to pull strongly with no issues once is get over 3000 RPM. I intend do a basic service this weekend, but sounds like an air leak?

Second problem, drove the several times before buying it and drove the car home, started fine each time but after standing for two days the starter isn't running, completely dead. Thought it was the battery, but its fully charged. When i turn the key, a relay in the clicks in the bonnet, but nothing from the starter or solenoid in the rear.

Last one, for now, the tacho reading has zero bearing on reality with the rev counter swinging wildly. I have searched the forum and it seems to be a common problem. Ground, alternator etc... Could it be linked to my first problem?

Regards

Stephen

Welcome, Stephen!

You'll find a lot of useful information and very helpful folks here. A couple of observations:

1) The <3000 rpm issues sound like a) vacuum leak(s); b) ignition [cap, rotor, esp. wires]; or c) part-throttle mixture issues which may or may not be related to vacuum leak(s)

2) My guess is the starting issue could be: a) bad ground connection(s) at battery or starter; or b) battery failure [how did you determine battery is OK? even at ~12VDC+, might have a dead cell or two and not delivering sufficient amps to start.} I'd pull it and have it load tested, or temporarily substiute a known good battery.

3) Wild tach movement has been covered here quite a bit; appears you've search the many threads on this topic. Might be related to first issue; might also be related to second issue if alternator/voltage regulator issue. Might also be engine/spark management issue. You mention has been converted to EFI; what brand/flavor? Some additional details in this regard might help Pelicans far more knowledgeable than me to help you.

Best,

Dale

Congrats on the new car, love the twist wheels, really gives it a modern look in a classic way, if that makes any sense...

Welcome to the 911 Madness

Nice looking ride.

I wish we had plates (short and wide) like yours so it would not disfigure the front of the car. I'm running without and have not been caught yet.

I suggest that you post your problems under a new thread with a title like; "Need help with..." as 90% of us could not go by a "Need help" thread without looking

P.S. For your non start problem, next time it happened, put you car in gear and rock it back in forth a few time and then try to start it.
