Turn signals
I have a '77 911 which is in very good condition - more interior cosmetic issues really. I read a recent post where the gauges were sent out and fully reconditioned. This is one of my future plans - possibly this winter. My question - the turn indicator in the speedo - when I use the turn signal both lights - left and right - come on. Is this due to the age and close proximity of the indicator or can this be changed when the gauge is reconditioned?

I had this problem in my Porsche and BMW. It is indicating a blown bulb or electrical fault. Have someone stand behind the car and tell you what the lights are doing while you activate the turn signals, brakes, etc.

The lights work outside - it's the one in the speedo where it shows both direction - just want to know if this is normal.

No not normal, check your wiring if good then send it back to shop to correct it

Probably a missing/poor earth connection on the speedo, they are rubber mounted so if the earth is poor then the return path is through the other light bulb. Simple to run a temporary earth with a jumper cable or similar.
