No, you have it backwards. They were anodized gold underneath the black paint. Gold is the original, factory color.

That's paint, not anodizing. The gold paint could have come from the factory. There were many versions of Fuchs done with different colored centers. I've seen gold centered 7 & 8" Fuchs like those on '74 and '75 Carreras.

While it is possible to anodize aluminum in a whole range of colors, the gold anodizing would be very pale. Anodizing is more of a tint. Also, anodizing selected areas of a wheel is something only done in the aftermarket, and not by many vendors.

Actually gold anodizing come out very vivid.

Nope. Like I said, I took the black paint off with paint remover. What was underneath is gold-colored aluminum, the result of dye being added during the process of anodizing.

Well, nothing's impossible, but those wheels would have had to be anodized then the anodizing polished off the outer rim to make them look like the pictures. Never seen that before, but I have seen that shade of gold paint on Fuchs centers.

mikepellegrini 02-25-2012 04:51 PM

Yup, it's metal. Polished outer rim; gold anodized inner.

Anodizing is just an electro-chemical process that deposits a thin layer of (usually harder) metal on the surface of the part. Dyes can be added for color.

The whole wheel is anodized. If I was gonna guess, I'd say that it was done on a two-part process where the dye was added only to the inner portion while the rest of the wheel was masked off.

That's an interesting question. I'll have to do some research.

I found this page, which lays the process out: http://www.focuser.com/anodize.html masking is out; After reading this, I'm not sure how these wheels were done.

You don't see these wheels very often, that's why I asked if they would be priced differently. Like I said, they're 15" - 7's and 8's with a 911 part number.

Am purchasing two original anodized 7x15s for an agreed price of $620 for the pair in like new condition.

rattlsnak 02-25-2012 05:46 PM

well FWIW, i still dont think that is factory. I have never seen gold wheels from the factory. But either way, it would come down to personal choice at this point on the value, but gold was more of an 80s color.

Those gold wheels came on silver(?) Anniversary 911s. I've seen them here in the 911 picture threads many times. They only came from Porsche on that year 911 in the 15x7&8 size. Never have seen them in 16s.

They look great on a black car!

Enjoy!

Thanks! Yeah, black and gold is a really great combination.

Well, that is probably for the best. I have had my eyes open to replace my replica set with 7s and 8s, but the plain reality is that there are no more 245/45R16 tires being made in street rubber. Even 245/50R16 rubber is pretty slim pickin's. Wide 16s aren't the hot ticket for tire makers, so in the next few years you won't be able to buy anything but track rubber for those wheels, and maybe not even then.

I figured that most owners of 7s and 8s would know this, and would want to get rid of their wheels now, while they still had value. But it seems like folks think these wheels are still worth $1200-1500 for the set. I think for that kind of money, I'll wait until the 17" replicas come out, and pay the $800-900 that the set will cost. When those wheels become available, good luck getting anything like that for real 16" Fuchs in the wider sizes.

Silber, sorry but you may not be accurate as for tire availibility;

I did, and called them. No stock, and "I'll get back to you about back order timing." Haven't heard back in five weeks, and every other place that listed them says "We don't have any, and they've been discontinued."

Constantly amazed a people who site opinions when they don't have the facts and could easily look them up using the mighty Google.

Factory gold wheels came on the Weissach special edition, just like another poster mentioned earlier.

On the tires issue for 9-inch wide 16 inch fuchs: I just bought a set of the Nexens for my 88 Carrera with 7/9 wheels. The Nexens are available if you look around. And they are surprisingly nice tires for the street. A great value at a little more than $100 a tire. They have exceeded my expectations.
