Fuchs availability and price analysis
Greetings Fellow Pelicans! I hope this message has reached you well and you're relaxing with your Porsche this weekend! SmileWavy
I'm hoping I can count on you for support. I'm conducting a study for a project. The goal of which is to determine the probability of being in a Fuchs pricing "bubble". Comments welcomed; however, if you have bought or sold 1 or more Fuchs wheels in the past 5 years I'd be very interested in capturing the specifics of the transaction and aggregating the data with what I have compiled so far. All results will be kept anonymous and aggregated results will only be posted to those participants and possibly other Pelicans on request. In particular, I'd like the following information about the sale or purchase for my database: 1. Sale or purchase 2. Fuchs (real or replica) - I'll be segmenting these and graphing separately. 3. Size, e.g., 15x6; 4. Offset if relevant, e.g., 16x8 951 vs. 911 offset 5. Quantity 6. Condition: poor ("hose reel"), fair, good, excellent, refinished, new 7. Finish: anodized, polished, RSR, chromed 8. Center color: Black, red, etc. 9. Sale Date (critical that it is as accurate and complete as possible) 10. Shipped from location (zip code is fine) 11. Shipped to location (zip code is fine) 12. Asking price for wheels (without shipping) 13. Selling price for wheels (without shipping) 14. Notes outlining anything special about the wheels, e.g., deep six with hearts; RSR; NOS, etc. I know it's a lot to ask, but you'll have the benefit of the getting a copy of the final report and graphs when the project is complete. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Greg |
Purchase
Fuchs 16x7 911 offset Good to great 2 Anodized Black 6-11-2011 Sold and bought in 87113 local pick up Asking and paid 350.00 for the pair |
just sold four 6x16 911 polished Fuchs
a wheel builder like Lindsey Racing will provide a base price on a good 6x16 Fuch wheel that they can trick out |
I'll offer these pictures for use of your project, BTW, wheels pictured here are not for sale, sorry.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1307836590.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1307836732.jpg If you send a set to Harvey to restore, look to spend close to $2K and wait at least 3 months (ended up taking a year on the last set we sent) 951 7&8X16s are a ONE YEAR ONLY wheel, and like the 9X16, have recessed lug holes and will clear larger brakes. 7&8X15s which use the 3 prong center caps and are dated in the early 70s are worth much more than a set of 7&8X15 Fuchs off a 85 944. The Dates of Fuchs has a lot to do with the difference in value of 2 wheels that other wise look the same... I was having one of my 9X15s resored and was told that the date & number on that wheel caused a bit of a stir in the shop when a few vintage guys stopped by for a weekly Porsche BS session, and weren't happy when he told them I wouldn't sell it.. A 930 Guru pointed out something very interesting years ago, and I have watched and seen that he was pretty much correct, but it is harder to find the 8X16 911 Fuchs than the 9X16s and when looking at wheels that come up for sale, it does seam that 9X16 (Porsche started offering them on the 1987 930s) come up for sale more often than the 8s.. OEM finish in perfect condition are worth the most, commanding about a 25%+ premium over average wheels, while chrome plated ones are the least valuable(someone slap Robert Wood) Hope this helps you with your project. |
OK, I'll add some data:
Purchased Fuchs -real 15x6 (deep six, non-heart) 5 wheels, matched set dated 4/71 condition very good centers and rest of wheels painted purchased in October 2010 purchased from zip 32073 purchased by zip 94526 price paid $2,400 which included shipping also included 4 clean center caps I hope that helps. The only other thing I would add is they are going to Weidman's for factory finish refinishing. |
I'm sure you could mine a ton of data from the 911 classified forum. That's how I priced the Fuchs I've sold/bought. Otherwise Byron is our resident Fuchs guru. (open to trades?) :D
|
Thanks so much for all the responses so far here and via PM. This is great! Exactly what I was hoping to find.
One observation and complication to mining data on the for sale board is that there is a tendency to change the asking price to "SOLD", after a sale. So most historical prices are lost. Keep the data coming and thanks again! Best, Greg PS - Byron - impressive display of hardware! |
Bubble ? They've recently declined a bit from the last 2 years prior . At least the vintage stuff.
And I love this : "date & number on that wheel caused a bit of a stir in the shop when a few vintage guys stopped by for a weekly Porsche BS session, and weren't happy when he told them I wouldn't sell it.." Well isn't that just too bad - for them. |
With 9X16s being sold again through the dealers, it will be interesting hw it effects the value and if they start offering other sizes, coursse that will no effect Deep "6"s, RSR Fuchs, 7Rs and such..

for average wheels on daily drivers, 7x8x16s = $1,200 and 7x9x16s = $1,500. Obviously pristine newly renifinished sets will bring more.
|
Rattlesnak, your prices are far and few to find...
Greg~ If your goal is to remain purist and original, carry on... If you just like the look, get some Rota's in a 17" size. You may begin to understand when you start shopping for tires. The selection for 17's is endless, while the selection for 16's are becoming far and few... You can get a new set of Rota's for $1200 - 7.5/9x17. This may help you for Fuch part #'s & sizes... 911 Wheel Weights |
Finally found my set with painted caps for my 930 7s and 9s of course. Best wheel ever made imho.

i NEED some 7x16's(2) and some 9 x 16's(2) for my track wheels. dont need to be purdy as all i want is a RS sandblasted look. dont need center caps as these will be strictly for the track.
point me in the right direction here. thanks for your time. tired as hell switching street tires on to my wheels and then track tires back onto my wheels. |

I'm no expert I like the idea that if I blast into something sideways the Fuchs won't break apart as much as others If I'm correct does anyone know if the trick custom Fuchs in 17" are just as sturdy? btw..... so what's the price paid for those beauties I think I paid $175/ea for four worn but good 951 T 7x16 finished dirty indoor pics are lousy http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308291096.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308291125.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308291164.jpg |

Unless you specifically need the 16's to stay in a particular class, save yourself a huge headache and just get some 17's!!! Tire selection is 10 times better!!!!!!! Fikse, Kodiak, HRE, Forgeline, CCW all make wheels for the 911. |

I haven't bought fuchs yet, but i am looking for 1 reasonably priced 15x7 black center Fuch
In my searching on ebay, $250-400 is what i have been seeing mostly |
As has been stated before, your best bet for a fair price will be here on our for sale forum. If you do a search for Fuchs 7x15 and don't come up with anything, try posting a WTB (would like to buy) ad and give it a week/end as see what kind of response you get.
I'd stay the heck away from e-bay, especially when buying wheels! Good luck, keep looking on Pelican and I'll bet you get your Fuchs at a fair price! Its worked for me every time, going on 3 sets now... Cheers |

I have at least 7 sets of 7&8x15; all real. I have never paid more that $700 for a set of 4 (and one set was free), except the 2 NOS 8x15 I paid $500 for. I also had a set of RSR 9x15 that i paid $900 for and sold for $1200 a couple years later. And there was also the 6&7x16 fully polished set I sold for $1100.
I think the price of wheels had gone up not because of higher demand (greater need), but rather because people are speculating them like and investment and hording them like Byron. |

Fuchs rim 6Jx15 ET 36 Fuchs rim 7Jx15 ET 23.2 Fuchs rim 7Jx16 ET 23.3 Fuchs rim 8Jx15 ET 10.6 Fuchs rim 8Jx16 ET 10.6 Fuchs rim 9Jx15 ET 3 Fuchs rim 9Jx16 ET 15 and there will be more reissues, and even cheaper possibilities if Fuchs gets into the act with direct sales, as has been rumored. I would expect the 11x15" RSR rim may be next on the Porsche Classic reissue list, or perhaps the 7R rim. While they are very durable rims, Fuchs can and do break after many use cycles work-harden the alloy and sufficient shock loading occurs. Most people, when faced with a choice between an unknown condition used rim and a brand new reissue at the same, or slightly greater price, will choose the new rim, I think. Only a concours nut who absolutely needs the correct date stamp appropriate to the model year will be willing to pay the premium for the older rim. I think we are already seeing this in the drop in value of the 9x15 RSR rims that were previously bringing astronomical prices in the used market, and to some extent with the price of the used 9x16s, which were increasing rapidly until they were reissued. Just my $0.02, TT |

One thing that has really changed things are people going for Concours restorations, now Date Codes make a HUGE difference in the value. 4.5, 5.5 & Deep 6s were scoffed up by the VW crowd years ago, limiting what is now available to the Early 911s. With high dollar restorations, if you have a 69 911S, you need Deep Sixes with Hearts with the proper date code, and you will be willing to pay for them, same if you have a 72 911ST or 73 RS or RSR ad need the correct 9s for that yr, and if your 74 Carrera a set of 7&8X15 Fuchs that came on a 85 944 just won't cut it.... As to higher demand, the VW crowd has been grabbing Fuchs since the 1st Porsches came with them, then in the 80s, with the "Minni Truck" craze, a lot of Fuchs starting finding homes on Datsuns, Toyota's and Mazdas, then they started ending up other imports.. The fact that many Porsche owners have been swapping out Fuchs for American Racing (in the early 70s) BBS, Gottis, ect in the 80s and in the 90s, it was Cup Is replacing Fuchs on pre-89 Porsches, then everyone wanted Turbo Twist. And when people figured out that 6X16 Fuchs made a great center for 2 & 3 piece wheels, some of us knew it and the 6s that had been selling for $50 a wheels since most people just set then in the garage after getting a set of 8s for the rear & moving the 7s up front, then in 87, the 9X16 Fuchs came with the once again US legal 930, and then the 8s lost values:(. While on 80s Fuchs, lots of 944s came with 7&8X15s, yet 911 snobs don't think they are worth as much as Fuchs from a 911, even though they have a 911 part # and while on the 944s, the 86 944 Turbo Fuchs (one year only) 7&8X16s where the 8s looked like 7s with the lack of dish, so at 1st, they could be bought cheap, then people started going to bigger brakes and figured out that the Fuchs off a 951 would clear the calipers that the other Fuchs wouldn't and that they could stuff the 951 8s under the front fender of an stock bodied SC & Carrera, the days of buying 951 7&8s for $300-$400 a set to $400 for a single 8, plus the 951 7s found a new uses as they cleared big brakes too.. There popularity is backed up by the fact that there have been so many aftermarket versions available over the years and in the last few years news ones have come out to meet the demand.. |

Do you mean real forged fuchs 16x9 are available from Porsche, or are you talking about replicas? |

Sweet. I have what I think are among the last 245/45 16 ContiSportContacts in North America. I'm hoarding them. You can still buy them in Germany for nearly $400 each.
Those Ecstas look very aggressive, Shaun. But back to the topic: I have a pair of 16 X 7 951 Fuchs that I've been advertising for 6 months with no apparent interest, and a full set of used 16 X 7 & 8" 951 Fuchs for $1100. 15 X 7" and 16 X 9" seem to me to be the most asked-for sizes of Fuchs. |

So what would a good original set of 14 x 5.5 Fuchs go for today and how desireable are they. I would think as time goes by they will also begin to climb in value.
Chrsi |
14x5.5 would be a VW/Samba sale right now....
