1978 to 1973 RSR Build Project

Hi All,

New poster, however long time reader of these forum's. Thought that seeing I was building a new project, and that I've read to much of the forum I should probably post my progress as I go, to let everyone else have some benefits from my build project.

I guess i'm the classic "cheque-book" tuner at this stage, although I have built numerous other non-Porsche project, being my first Porsche build, I have engaged Patrick Motorsports. I didn't originally plan to get someone else to do this build, but I contacted Scott @ Patrick for the G50 conversion information. Long story short, we got talking and one thing lead to another, hence we're now building my project in there shop.

I originally bought a 1973 911T shell, with the plans to restore that, however upon pulling down the car we quickly found too much rust to salvage the project. After doing some searching, James from Patrick Motorsports offered me a 1978 Turbo, which was in a good condition.

Anyway the project plan is as follows:
  1. Convert the Body to 1973/74 RSR style
  2. Buy and build a 993TT Engine
  3. Modify all the engine, suspension and other components to make as good as reasonably possible
  4. paint a traditional color
  5. Enjoy the rest of the car!

I'll try and do updates as I go, I have a few historical picture to get everyone upto date on the project thus far.

Chassis Works

I'm putting the shortened G50 6 Speed Transmission in, so we had to make some minor modifications...

We also just started getting the "ducktail" and front nose conversion started...

Holiday Delays

So, the upside of getting someone else to do this work is that it's all coming together a lot faster than if I had done it myself.

The front is now starting to all line up and match nicely...

provisions and planning for the inter-cooler and air jack system have started...

Roll cage

So we started with the fabrication for the roll-cage.

I'm at a bit of a loss here, and i'm getting told a lot of conflicting stories about was it legal in Australia (specifically NSW). There are a lot of issues with getting roll cages engineered in Australia, so I need to get this right... below is the rear (which isn't much of a problem)

This shows the air-jacks now welded in, and the rear cage positioning.

Nice welding/fab work.. should be an interesting build. Enjoy!

i presume this is a dedicated race car build?

Jack Olsen 06-13-2011 09:32 PM

Very nice!

No! I actually intend on road registering the car in NSW, Australia. That said, I have hit a few minor (actually major) issues with our Roads & Traffic Authority, and the regulations surrounding various modifications I've made.

Specifically they won't allow a full welded in roll-cage (biggest issue)...

However there are still a couple of hurdles on the emissions front to overcome, as well as noise.

Nice

Nice project! Will be following this one.

James, nice looking details. Should be fast. I'm curious about your emission "hurdles"

I would have thought you'd be fine as you're replacing the existing engine with a newer, and therefore, "cleaner" one. Or are you planning on using a non-factory computer?

I'm planning on using the Motec system. I would like to build this to circa 600+HP. I figure that it's a good goal, which is achievable.

I understand that the engine needs to meet the later emission standards - that is the 993 emissions, as opposed to the 930 emissions.

Unless you know otherwise?

Id love to see more about the air jacks as well.. nice build

GH85Carrera 06-14-2011 05:45 AM

Wow, nice build.

That will be one heck of a car. It looks like a left hand drive car. Will that cause problems down under?

AlexJ 06-14-2011 06:39 AM

Hi James,

Is it possible to inform where did you buy the panel marked on the photo? Or did you fabricate it?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308062319.jpg

If any other person can help, I'll appreciate.

Thanks

looks like a top notch project, can't wait to see more progress

No, we can drive registered LHD cars. However I do understand that they are looking to change this in the future for newly imported vehicles.

Hopefully I finish the build before they change the rules!

Patrick Motorsports are doing the build. I would suggest that you email Scott McIlvain <scott@patrickmotorsports.com>, I had a look on there website and couldn't find the part, so best to give them a buzz.

This is going to be a fun one to follow!

Yes, the engine has to meet emissions it was complianced to meet. I don't know how you'll get past that with the motec, and will watch with interest your progress with this issue.

600 bhp in the little car:eek: that will be interesting. I'd have trouble with the standard 408 bhp. Looks like you're building an early interpretation of a GT2. Crazy fun! Hopefully I'll get to see it at some stage here in town.
