1978 to 1973 RSR Build Project
Hi All,
New poster, however long time reader of these forum's. Thought that seeing I was building a new project, and that I've read to much of the forum I should probably post my progress as I go, to let everyone else have some benefits from my build project. I guess i'm the classic "cheque-book" tuner at this stage, although I have built numerous other non-Porsche project, being my first Porsche build, I have engaged Patrick Motorsports. I didn't originally plan to get someone else to do this build, but I contacted Scott @ Patrick for the G50 conversion information. Long story short, we got talking and one thing lead to another, hence we're now building my project in there shop. I originally bought a 1973 911T shell, with the plans to restore that, however upon pulling down the car we quickly found too much rust to salvage the project. After doing some searching, James from Patrick Motorsports offered me a 1978 Turbo, which was in a good condition. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006109.jpg Anyway the project plan is as follows:
I'll try and do updates as I go, I have a few historical picture to get everyone upto date on the project thus far. |
Chassis Works
I'm putting the shortened G50 6 Speed Transmission in, so we had to make some minor modifications...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006501.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006522.jpg We also just started getting the "ducktail" and front nose conversion started... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006565.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006575.jpg |
Holiday Delays
So, the upside of getting someone else to do this work is that it's all coming together a lot faster than if I had done it myself.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006674.jpg The front is now starting to all line up and match nicely... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006693.jpg provisions and planning for the inter-cooler and air jack system have started... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006768.jpg front air-jack point http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006895.jpg bracket fabrication for air jacks http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006925.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006940.jpg rear air jacks in place for fitment http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006958.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308006977.jpg |
Roll cage
So we started with the fabrication for the roll-cage.
I'm at a bit of a loss here, and i'm getting told a lot of conflicting stories about was it legal in Australia (specifically NSW). There are a lot of issues with getting roll cages engineered in Australia, so I need to get this right... below is the rear (which isn't much of a problem) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308007171.jpg This shows the air-jacks now welded in, and the rear cage positioning. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308007290.jpg |
Nice welding/fab work.. should be an interesting build. Enjoy!
|
i presume this is a dedicated race car build?
|
Very nice!

Specifically they won't allow a full welded in roll-cage (biggest issue)... However there are still a couple of hurdles on the emissions front to overcome, as well as noise. |
Nice
|
Nice project! Will be following this one.
|
James, nice looking details. Should be fast. I'm curious about your emission "hurdles"
I would have thought you'd be fine as you're replacing the existing engine with a newer, and therefore, "cleaner" one. Or are you planning on using a non-factory computer? |

I understand that the engine needs to meet the later emission standards - that is the 993 emissions, as opposed to the 930 emissions. Unless you know otherwise? |
Id love to see more about the air jacks as well.. nice build
|
Wow, nice build.
That will be one heck of a car. It looks like a left hand drive car. Will that cause problems down under? |
Hi James,
Is it possible to inform where did you buy the panel marked on the photo? Or did you fabricate it? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308062319.jpg If any other person can help, I'll appreciate. Thanks |
looks like a top notch project, can't wait to see more progress

Hopefully I finish the build before they change the rules! |

This is going to be a fun one to follow!

600 bhp in the little car:eek: that will be interesting. I'd have trouble with the standard 408 bhp. Looks like you're building an early interpretation of a GT2. Crazy fun! Hopefully I'll get to see it at some stage here in town. |
James,
I share in your excitement in this project. I love to see it evolve everyday and cannot wait to hear it fire up for the first time! If anyone has any questions about this project please give me a PM or post them and I will do my best to answer them. I will keep getting James photos so he can update this thread. We build some great Porsche's but this one is going to be truly one of a kind!!!! Sincerely, Scott scott@patrickmotorsports.com |

Re the Motec - A couple of people I have spoken with seem to think that I can get it through, just a bit of planning and work... time will tell. I'll definitely get the car out and about in Sydney once it arrives. A early GT2 is very much my inspiration. |
Very cool. Sorry about the cage!
|
Got some pics of the Transmission today
So James Patrick and Patrick Motorsports sent me a late email today with some photo's of the six speed G50, short bell housing transmission. So excited! I decided that spending the extra bit on a 6 speed was worth it! It's been completely overhauled so it should be exciting...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308275223.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308275234.jpg |
So a couple of people have PM'd me about Patrick Motorsports, and wanted references etc as to there work.
I can only be very positive and say that they have been really helpful. For those with questions around the quality of work etc, I thought its best that I just post the sort of photo's I get from them on the build... So today I got some pictures showing the welding on the cage.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308388972.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308388995.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308389013.jpg Anyway I'm really happy with the build to date. If anyone wants to know more feel free to post or PM me. |
Just love the whole idea James. I am in Vic and would love to drive up and have a look when its done. Maybe a road trip in the 930. Good luck mate.
|
James ,
I would suggest you get Patrick to make the cage but not weld the front half in until you have been through rego. Btw awesome looking project Regards Michael |
I've decided to just do a rear half cage.
Registration is a nightmare, I wish the RTA would look at these things as improvements where they are done professionally and with care and thought. The problem is all the "half-jobs" which have ruined it for those who want to do it right. I had been considering doing another car, but the registration and import rules, not to mention the duties just keeps making me thing its not worth the effort. On other news, I had a small accident yesterday in my C2S. I got cut off and mounted the gutter. I should have let him hit me, at least I wouldn't have been at fault. Not really sure the extent of the damage, at least two rims. Perhaps some suspension components. Very annoying seeing I had just spent the weekend painting the wheels black. Anyway I'm really p#$Sed off about the entire thing. |
very very nice and informative, enjoy in good health!
|
Sorry to hear about the accident -> hopefully you're fine and it's just the wheels!
|
Sorry to hear of your off road experience... but you pictures make me want to go get a welder....and then some skills, too I guess. :)
|
So I got a couple of pictures today of the heads from the 993 TT that we're building... thought I should share:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308792699.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1308792720.jpg So this now completes all the major engine components that were needed to get the long block built. I'm hoping that early next week it will get put back together, and I will be sharing photo's of a built engine. On the other fronts, the body is about to be taken back to bare metal for paint preparation, so that's exciting. Again when I get some photo's I will share them with you all... |

Any update on the project James?
|
I had a discussion with the guys at Patrick Motorsports on Saturday morning (Sydney) which is Friday afternoon in Phoenix, AZ.
The car is next in line for the paint shop, so I'm hoping to have some pictures this week with progress. The engine is all in component form, and I'm expecting to get photo's of its build when it occurs (again this should hopefully be this week). Both are going to be built simultaneously so hopefully i'll have great pictures in the next week to share. |
I'm so bloody jealous...
;) (Good luck with everything) |
awesome...
|
What size oil cooler are you putting on that?
I'm doing up a 73 with RSR bumper and the giant cooler that came with this project has no hope of fitting behind the bumper, even with significant ducting. Thanks |

I wonder if one of these would more or less bolt right in to a G50 911. I see that the front bracket has been cut or machined off. How about provisions for mounting the cross member?
