Project Management - Restoration: Cap in hand requesting advice/help
Hi fellow Pelicans....
I am about to go and pull the trigger on a rolling 73 tub that I want to rat-rod up with a tasty engine (3.2/3.4) and use for generally scratching around the North Bay CA twisties, on the odd trackday, and DE/Autocross.... While I have no idea what this car will end up looking like, I do know that I am about to tread a path that many of you have trodden before me, and those I've seen with amazing success! ![]() While I have been around these cars a LOT and owned a fair few for the majority of my adult life, I have never got 'deep down and dirty' to this degree.... I used to maintain my Bug back in the day, but never more than general maintenance, and certainly have never restored a thing... This brings me to my request - has anyone out there who has embarked on something similar created a base sort of 'project plan (xls)' that they used to manage their resto from beginning to end (Nippy?? ) that I might be able to have a look at (read: blatantly steal from you) so as not to re-invent the wheel?!? All I will offer in return is a documented build from the ground up by a novice who will probably fall into most PITA holes available, but will do it with a smile (maybe) and a digital camera (definitely)... Thanks for your time, Kemal

I have also gone down this road. In fact, Im about 99% done. My only suggestion is to decide exactly what you want to end up with in the beginning. I didnt do this and "mission creep" ended up coming into play and I bought several things many times in the name of improvments. It would have been much less $ to get it all right in the beginning. Mine is here:
Here is my new/old project.....Lilly

@JP - Most definitely - Thanks loads
![]() Guys - nice threads - I guess I can build a checklist from there - and amend on the fly. It wasn't a project plan as such - I mis-informed - was more a checklist of things to do is all, as i not done one before... I'll get there :-)

First clearly define your goal.....
take photos of other cars you wish to re-create. Drive or get rides in simiar cars. Decide how/where you are going to use it. Then decide How you are going to do it....... Decide the specifications ( spring rates, gear ratios, compression, etc) at the beginning. Compose a materials list. Get all quotations and do the budget. Develop a timeline to keep a 6 month project from turning into 36. Then do it. Keep to original goal, timeline and budget, and dreams come true. |
