Where does this attach?
I was poking around in the front luggage compartment, and found this. Being still fairly new to the car, and not finding anything in my various manuals (admittedly, I didn't look *that* hard, with so many experts here) I need to know, where should this black plastic piece attach?

I think that's the vent for the battery. The idea is to vent the fumes to the outside of the car.
The other end exits to the outside the body somewhere. Trace it back and see were it goes. There should be a hole in the top cover of the battery that it plugs into. Also....Check for any spilt acid around the bottom of the battery. Because that's not plugged into the battery top you may have lost some battery acid. ![]()

My guess is that it attaches to your headlight washer nozzle below your headlights.

Really? Maybe the previous owner changed out the bumper...? Just a thought. I would think '88s would have 'em as standard equipment....but I don't know...

sure looks like washer fluid plumbing, although the nozzle would have been on the other side of the front bulkhead (ie, outside the tub).

Hmm, I don't think it was removed, since there is no switch on the dashboard for a headlight washer, and there isn't any tubing going over to the right side where the other headlight would be.

if you dont know what it is, dont lead someone down the wrong path.
it is a battery vent. the headlight washer tubing is all outside of the car, none in the trunk area, and you can see the windshield pump in his photo. |

So I looked around the battery, which is fairly new, and found no place for this to attach. My guess is that the PO replaced the battery, and seeing no place to attach this vent, just left it dangling.
Is there any concern about this? Can I just leave it this way?

Have you done this yet? If so, where does the other end of the tube go?

The other end of the tube, after about 6 inches, goes into a hole on the inside of the left front fender. So it can't be traced back very far. Maybe the issue here is that the newer battery either (A) does not require venting, so the tube is now unnecessary or (B) can be vented, but this connector did not fit.
