Noise in Reverse
83 SC with 183K on it. Transmission typically works great, no troubles, especially if you are patient and deliberate. I am usually very careful to make sure the gears are engaged, etc, don't rush it. A couple of weeks ago i was putting the car into reverse to. Didn't seem like reverse engaged, so I let the clutch out. Apparently it was in gear or partly in gear, real loud thump. No apparent problems, I re-grouped, back in to reverse, drove off. I was several hundred miles from home, drove the car home, which included several uses of reverse, no issues. Four or five days later, i was backing out of the garage, noticed a relatively high frequency tick, tick, tick when in reverse. If I take it out of gear (still rolling in reverse) the noise dissipates. I have recently noticed the tranny is dripping fluid on the garage floor. Apparently Swepco, needs to be changed due to age and miles, would like to switch to Kendall based on recommendations found on this forum... As far is I know the transmission hasn't been cracked open before, although there was an upgrade made to the clutch. Don't have the paperwork in front of me but I think it is a common upgrade....not sure if that involves opening the tranny.
Concerned my rookie maneuver has damaged something. Thoughts on the source of the noise? Thanks |

Ticking??? It could be the trans or CVs but more likely the trans.
Change the oil and check everything (linkage, mounts, adjustment)... Then I would keep driving it. They really are a tough old box. They are getting old but the 915 is simple and robust. I doubt one missed shift would hurt anything. You can change out the clutch without opening the trans. Maybe you're listening more carefully now than you had before.

Thanks.......changing out the fluid is first on the list. I am glad it is only reverse. The rest of the gears are great, IMO. I don't want to spend a truck load of cash just to fix reverse........and yes, I listen for that noise everytime I back up. It makes my skin crawl to think it is something I may have caused. Trying to convince myself it wasn't from the mis-shift.

Well, at least reverse gear is easily accessable to look and see if there is anything wrong.

When you drain the oil run it through a strainer, see if you get any pieces
 I had a couple of fragments and, you guessed it, fellow Pelicans were able to tell me exactly what was wrong!
