Just rebuilt my AFM - Holy Crap!!!!

After reading the step-by-step for the 944 AFM rebuild, I decided to go for it this weekend after suffering though all sorts of stumbling, surging and poor idle for so long. I should have done this months ago! It was very straightforward and while the 944 article is fairly complete, it does leave out some of the remove/replace steps. It took:
30 min. to remove AFM from car.
15 min. to rebuild AFM
30 min. to clean and semi-polish AFM exterior (heck, why not make it look like you did something?)
30 min. to re-install AFM and test drive.
And if I did this sort of thing for a living, I could probably have done in half the time.
BTW, I have an extra AFM for a 3.2 (that needs rebuilding)
-Bill

Thought about doing this too, any noticeable difference?

P.S.: Any pics of your El Camino?

My AFM has about 240k miles on it, so I could probably stand to do this myself. Where are these instructions?

Here is the article I was using for most of the info. Air Flow Meter (AFM) - from "The 944 Motronic DME" by FR Wilk* ©2001 www.the944.com There is also some stuff in Youtube as well.
The biggest improvement is the part throttle surging is GONE. Also, idle is less choppy.
I had picked up a used AFM from eBay, did a basic bench test that showed no major issues, and had a service tech install that a few weeks ago, to help (hopefully) pass smog. It did pass, but ran like crap - much worse than my original, so that's what prompted me to rebuild my original and swap it with the eBay one. I now have an extra AFM that I plan to rebuild and sell. Anyone interested?

BTW, here is some video of the Elky(it's still 'in-progress')

'Rebuild' may not be the best term, but what I basically did (as the article describes) is clean and re-align the the wiper arm to a new path on the conductive plastic strip. Just like trying to save a P&G fader that has seen too many late night sessions..
I also cleaned all friction contact areas, a quick blast of air to blow out any dust/debris, and resealed the black plastic cover with hi-temp silicone.

I don't even have an AFM on my 911 but I really like the sound of the Elky.

If you listen closely, you can hear the opening drums of "Hot for Teacher".

I like the ZR1 wheels as well.

Far from a "rebuild",....for sure: fresh copper contact can be had quite easily on that "sweep",..and "yes" it certainly CAN contribute to various weirdness(s)....

I will definately NOT EVER touch that damned spring!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fresh copper=GOOD!!!!!!!!

BEST!
