Fuse panels....
 
Tirwin,

I believe that the fuse panels are the same size/number of fuses for the SC and the Carrera years. The wiring is probably different in the Carreras, but that won't matter much since this fuse panel is designed to replicate the original. That is, the wires going to fuse 1 on the original panel will still go to fuse 1 on the replacement. The only exception that I know of will be to split the load for the evaporator fan and the front condenser fan to keep it below 20 amps. I'll have to double check on the shunts built into the back of the original fuse holders, but I think they are the same for both SCs and Carreras.

Yep, just checked the PP parts and the three fuse panels are common for all years of SC and Carrera, 1978-1989 so the shunts/jumpers will be the same.

I am going to build a master plate out of steel to use as a template for cutting the aluminum plates. That way, they will all be the same and will take less time to create, thus keeping the costs down as much as possible. The only problem with this enterprise is that once you replace the fuse panel, it's done and I've lost a customer! Oh well, maybe a little "word of mouth" advertising will keep things going!

You just have to come up with clever accessories and improvements that everyone will want. Like perhaps relay holders that replace the round units and compliment the look of the more modern fuse panel, or for additional relays for headlights or other higher current items. Or come up with a nice integrated cover for the panel. Maybe you'll build a bolt in panel for the engine compartment on different models. As long as it looks good and addresses a need, the sky is the limit.

Exactly. Make a unit that modernizes the fuses AND relays and I'll bite.

Me too. How complicated is the installation. Sure are alot of short tight wires in a small space.

Chances are that the wire ends will be corroded and need to be clipped, so I hope there is enough wire left to connect to the new and improved fuse panel.

Fred,
Kevin mentioned the three (3) fuse panels in our vehicles...since your prototype is for just one (1), the biggie... then you have a built in customer base by creating a better mousetrap for the other two (2).
Question.....
Is this unit to be the complete panel including relays. If so, Would you consider, or can you move the red relay from the end position. Reason...While working on the trunk area, I sometimes pushed on the leading edge of the cover..moves the red relay out of its socket so I always check that prior to starting the car. Maybe it is just me who has done this:=)

Some random info......
 
This will replace the fuse holders only. The relays and their wiring is not disturbed. The wires will most likely need to be cut back slightly. I found that by cutting back about 1/4" or so got into clean copper. Very important!!! Label each wire or wires before removing them from the fuse connection. I used 1T/1B for fuse position 1 Top or bottom, etc. The stock fuse cover will still work. You can skip one fuse holder to leave room for the bottom front tab on the cover or simply remove the tab (what I did). You will have to add crimp on female terminals for each side of each fuse. Use the very best terminals that you can find and finish up with a short piece of heat shrink. I used one color for the top connection and another for the bottom. I actually only found one wire that was so short that it was difficult to work with, the fuel pump relay fuse on the bottom side. I would also encourage anyone that undertakes this mod to study the wiring diagram for your can enough to understand to what each wire is connected. On the heavy gauge red wires (provide 12v power) I crimped and soldered the connection. The job is not difficult, but is tiring as you will wind up leaning over the fender for several hours. Patience and attention to detail are very much needed. Do it right the first time! Hope this helps.

Nice work, I was considering updating the fuses for my project. I was thinking about a few options for the fuse block, I like the way yours came out, although I would solder and shrink tube the connections for long term reliability. Not a flame, just an observation.

I especially like your work on the rear relay board.
