3.2 owners beware

Hi all, most of experienced 911 owners will know of this but for newbies like me it was a lucky find. While digging around my engine bay just to see what was back there l removed the air filter housing assy, when l was refitting it there are two hoses that are attached by a bracket to the rear half of the air filter housing, l guess after 20+ yrs the weight of the bracket cracks the housing therefore letting your pride and joy suck in unfiltered air. This could be seen by removing the top half of the air filter housing and taking out the filter and then with a torch the cracks can be seen running from the hose mounting point on the inside of the housing, lucky for me mine was just starting to crack and l only have 6k on a fresh engine, l have since found other threads on this but before l found mine l had no idea, sorry pics not available at this time l just thought l'd make other 3.2 owners aware of this what could be a costly find.BTW could someone tell me what the two hoses are and where can l get them as mine are starting to crack.Cheers Gerry

Just had my motor out for a garage rebuild this past winter so I looked at those two hoses alot. Both I believe are vent hoses to the oil tank area. Very similar in length and function. Easy to remove/replace with the engine out. If access is tight, maybe a partial engine drop (not too bad) so you can fit your hands back there to loosen the clamps. Mine were in fine shape, replaced by PO during an engine out activity maybe 10 years ago. My clamp at the airbox seemed fine as I remember it. Luckily it clamps very close so not too much stress as I'm thinking. Of course any 24 year old plastic (mines and 87) has got to be suspect.
I believe "most" all the rubber and hoses are available from our host. Few bits that aren't can be "home-made".

thanks, good thing to check when ever the lid is open. Might be an idea to beef this up in some way before it cracks and opens an unfiltered air path.

I'm sure others have repaired cracked or split air boxes. I did a minor repair to mine in the front where the screw boss is going down on the aluminum intake manifold. I used some fiberglass mesh (drywall tape type, what I had on hand) and some kind of black RTV/sealant stuff as I remember. Tried to do a neat job and its held up well for years. Used the mesh on the inside only where the surface was level. Small amount on the outside and its not noticible at all to me.

With the position of the crack l don't think l'd be confident of trying to repair it, and if l did l would definately leave the hose bracket off. For the sake of a few hundred$ compared to many thousands ,apparantely Fabspeed sell aftermarket airboxs.Cheers Gerry

Fabspeed only sells the cover, not the part on the "clean" side of the filter. At least on the web-site. You can make your own "open style cover" from your existing cover. The dirty side plastic part might be NLA on Pelican for an 87 911.

Do you have a pic?

I recently changed my oil with the OEM airbox and filter. I was amazed how clean my oil came out. I mean little to no debris on the magnet plugs.

Si Magnifique!

Wow so clean

The pic needed is the fracture prone area of the OEM air box.

Hoses are easy to access with the air box, air flow meter and throttle body elbow removed from the engine. Yes they are vent hoses to the oil tank. One vents oil from the top of the engine to the oil tank. The other vents the oil tank back to the engine via the rubber elbow connected to the throttle body. These are hoses #26 and #28

The hoses themselves are not heavy at all. So I don't think the broken air box issue is due to weight burden. I think it's from an unknowing person removing the air box and then pulling on the box while the hoses are still screwed to the box (part #30) However they do become quite hard with age and sometimes will not seal well at the engine case vent fitting when re-clamped.

Lucky mine was never connected to my doner airbox. I've always had the K&n filter until recently.

I was thinking about re-mounting it but now will leave it off for preventative measures. Damn airbox is NLA new.

Hose number 26 got me a black flag last month during my last track session as it broke off at the clamp where it meets the crankcase breather fitting on top of the engine and it started spewing oil all over my engine causing a James Bond smoke screen effect which the very vigilant marshalls promptly reported to race control ... lol
What a friggin mess to clean !!!

Cut 4 inches of the bottom and reclamped but they will be replaced next Winter when i drop the engine ...

Cheers !

What is item 27 in the exploded parts view in post #12? Is this the device that reduces vacuum flow to keep the engine from dying when the oil tank cap is removed?

Where does this exploded view come from? ... looks like a manual/book I need

Not exactly... Its the hose clamp. I'm guessing you might have type the wrong #.

The view comes from the CAT (cataloged). When you are on the New Part Catalog tab on Pelican, look to your left and you should see a pictures of a cylinder head with a title What New: Can't find it?, click on it and follow the instruction.
