Has anyone passed emissions testing with the air injection system removed?
Has anyone out there passed their emission test with the air injection system removed? I'm planning on removing mine and was curious if I have to re-install it every two years for emissoin testing.

I passed mine pretty easily here in Minnesota. I don't remember what the exact limits where though. Also, the only equipment they checked for was the cat. If your state is like CA, then they do a more complete visual exam.

RI is not as strict as CA. We only started doing emission testing 2 years ago. Sounds like I can remove it and pass without it. When you pulled your air injectors, did they come out easy?

Can't help you there, they were already removed when I purchased it.

Removing the air injectors is easy, they just screw out. Since my car is not quite smog exempt, I just remove the air pump, and cap off the diverter valve right now. But next year when I get the Collector car plates, I'm gutting the whole shebang.

Just curious about those who have removed this system. Do you notice any difference in performance, or is it just a matter of getting rid of superfluous hardware that clutters the engine compartment. Is there any detrimental effect from removing the air injection system?

If you just remove the air pump you must plug the diverter valve, or the car will back fire.
The harm that is done by removing the air injection system, is to the environment on start up. The only performance gain is less weight ( around 25 lbs.) and less drag on the pulley system. (maybe 1-3HP at upper rpm's) Removing the system makes it easier to replace oil return tubes. That's another benefit. |

I removed the entire rail system on mine when I installed SSI's, and pluged the holes. The air pump - when installed - just blew air onto the muffler, but that wasn't obvious to joe minimum wage smog tester. I just sold off my air pump, rails, brackets, EGR, etc to another lister for $60.

A word to the wise. I wouldn't advise getting rid of your system when you change it over.
The California BAR is on a new rampage for catching cheating/lazy techs. They have to look at your underhood label for the smog equipment that supposed to be on the engine. If it says "AIR" and you don't have an air punp and injectors, then it goes into the system as "tampered"- meaning you get to make an appointment to go to a referee. You are supposed to get an Executive Order label from the BAR for any engine changes or aftermarket equipment you install. They need a papertrail to show the feds that CA is (still) trying to cleanup so they get their Highway construction $$s. I read a while back that if you have Thermal Reactors removing the air pump will slow down exhaust flow. Therefore the Reactors will become hotter.

Before removing, check whether the RI inspectors have a visual check list, and what is on the check list for your car.
If the visual list says "air pump", the inspector will (should) verify that an air pump is installed. You don't want to be in that situation after the fact. My 1 cent.
