Why do you feel need a new AFM for your engine? Some of the common failures are easily fixed as a Do-It-Yourself afternoon project. (The common one is changing the wiper arc.)
BTW, just a technical detail: It isn't a a Mass Flow sensor. It is an Air Flow Sensor. A MAF is a sensor designed to detect the mass of the air going through the sensor. The way this is done in an automotive sensor is they use a heated wire where they can calculate how many air atoms/molecules come in contact with the wire by how much heat they absorb from the wire. There are some MAF conversions but they are expensive and they haven't been shown to give any performance improvement on stock motors when tested by a well known independent engine builder.

I believe the 911 AFM's are all the same from 1984 through 1992.

if you really feel as if you need to replace your AFM, try a good used one from Weekend Rides LLC. Good prices and Rick has been a pleasure to deal with.

The reason for asking about the air flow sensor is this is what the mechanic said was wrong. The sensor was damaged by an engine backfire. I'm not familiar with this myself, and know very little about it. I just thought 1400.00 bucks was a little much for a sensor. If you have any advice or could help in some way it would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen more than a few on eBay. The dismantlers have them. Parts Heaven, dC Automotive, Patrick Motorsports....avoid LAPD.

I just bought a rebuilt one for my 87 911 from Parts Heaven for $250 and works great.
Call Al or Spencer at 510-782-0354. They ship By the way this takes about 25 minutes to do the swap. It is plug and play no adjusting. Hope this helps Chris |

Rock Auto has one for $150 + $75 core charge.
I would be very interested in your old one. |

What are the symptoms of knowing / thinking you need one? Stalling? Unable to start?

Any chance you car is a Turbo? A CIS airbox explosion would be much more likely. Assuming it is an AFM I would search this forum for how to adjust and test the AFM. It is a pretty simple and pretty indestructible piece of equipment.

backfires bend the flap, then it either drags or passes too much air at idle/low rpm. sometimes you can pry it straight with a couple of screwdrivers. same through 1994.

I would assume you could take another one with toasted electronics and put them together to make a good one for cheap.

Eventually they wear out. I bought an almost new one dirt cheap from Einmalig a few years ago. It's in my stash of troubleshooting spares.
