Wong Chipped 85 targa questions and concerns...

Just chipped my 85 Carrera with a Wong chip, removed Weltmeister, soldered in the jumper pin, etc. My soldering job was novice, but it appears effective.

Car sat for a few days, just drove it for a while today. Here's what I've noticed, and any feedback would be great since this is my first p car.

1. After adjusting idle down to what I think is 800-900 rpm (just above the tick below 1000), the idle still seems to hunt a little bit and "percolates"....is this normal?

2. Started it up and heard a new sound, almost a slight "groan" for the first minute or so that accompanied the engine as it revved. Anyone experience this? After a time, I think it goes away...at least I don't think I hear it. Either way, I'm not sure it's a good sound. The brake pad light lit up as well. Don't know if it's related....

3. Oil pressure is about 3 at about 2200-2500 rpm...I remember it around 3.5. When I'm getting on or it's at 4. Again...does this sound normal

Throttle seems more responsive, not hearing pinging....oil level appears good.

I'm trying to decide if I have an issue. I think I'm going to take it in anyway just to check it out...

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks,

John

I only have questions for # 1 - Nah, she shouldn't hunt - You had to lower the idle? Had you done any other work? Was she idling high before the chip change?

Dan,

No other work done, bone stock. My 85 needed a jumper pin for the motronic PCB which according to Steve puts it at 87-89 specs and can increase idle, which it did, around 1000 rpm. Adjusted the screw down to get it to "spec". I just took it for a spin and the hunting may be gone. Once everything warms up, it appears to get much better. Maybe Steve can chime in if he sees this....

Groaning noise may be the tranny...just noticed the noise didn't start until I put it into reverse...again, once things warmed up and I was on the road, no I'll effects were noticed. Shifted just like butter...Maybe a fresh oil change for both engine and gearbox is in order....

Otherwise, the chip seems to have increased the"pep" in her step.

I would take the Wong chip out and put back in the Porsche chip and re adjust the idle back to normal.. Did it run fine before you did this? Really, what is a few more H.P.? You should not mess with the idle anyway. The computer does that. Your car has 207 H.P. Most sports cars today have 100-200 more than that. It is what it is. A terrific sports car.

How did you check & adjust your base idle? You did jumper B & C, headlights off?

The target RPM is 880RPMs, just a hair below middle of the 800 hash and 1000 hash mark. Remember the 1st hash is 200, 400, 600, 800 then 1000. ( only 4 hashes before 1000 ).

When hunting, tap on the Idle Control Valve, if it clears up then it may need cleaning and check the OHMs per Bentley.

If you can, borrow a LM1 or LM2 to check the Air Fuel Ratio is proper. it may be too rich?

Jim

PMed you.

Did the jumper, but am going to do the process again to check. Will look into ICV.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not new to performance mods like this, but am new to 26 year old Porsches! I did the chip mainly for the driveability improvements in the midrange not really for HP.

Thanks again for the advice guys.

Post a pic of the solder job, while you are in there. also the new chip installed. I know it is in the proper orientation, but would like to check. The PCB should have a outline how it should sit in the pins.

As Hugh R said "Call Steve", I will say it also call Steve! When you call, your not calling some call centre or some other baloney, your calling Steve! He is a good guy and will help you till the issues are solved. He helped me and my issues were my own doing. The SW chip is the best one out there and only surpassed by Steve's tremendous customer support.
