'87 Carrera ignition timing questions
So I might get more visibility than from my old thread About to run my '87 Carrera off a cliff - still surging and backfiring, I decided to ask a question separately.
Does the Carrera timing jump up right after the idle microswitch is deactivated? At idle, I am getting 5 degrees. Just barely crack the throttle, I get ~20 degrees Revving up from about say 2000-4000RPM, it climbs from 34-37/38 degrees. Revving it >4000RPM, it will hit 40 degrees. Now, Todd from Protomotive stated he bumps the idle timing up a lot due to the low-compression (7.5:1 for turbo) and 27-30 for WOT. I wonder if mine has to make boost to lower back down from the 40 I got to the 27-30 he says he maps it to? I know, go talk to the chip maker but I was curious if the timing jumps like this normally on a stock Carrera. ![]()

I think I answered my own question.
The timing is programmed high for off-boost, 7.5:1 driving, then, the WOT switch backs the timing off for the boost. I think.....
