Drive train noise when in first.

Occasionally I get a noise when pulling starting out slowly from a stop. I can't hear it once i get going, but don't know if it's drowned out or simply stops being made.

I've heard it for the past few years I have owned the car, but am only now more getting curious about it. This might be because of the trans mounts I installed months ago are transmitting the sound better.

The best I can do is to say it sounds like a low whirring or 'errrr'. It actually sort of reminds me of the sound some old milk delivery trucks used to make a real long time ago. (!) I cannot tell if it is a CV or diff/tranny noise. The PO notes that the CVs were rebuilt around 2007. I can tell it is different from the G50 rattle. There is no vibe or judder.

Can anyone offer me any clues? Thanks(, and please excuse any late reply by me.)

Hey Dan!

OK, Trans Mounts OEM or Cabroilet aka Sport Mounts?

I changed both trans and motor mounts to the harder cab mounts and I hear drive train noise, it is slight but there. Prior to the change no noise, I consider it a side effect for better/precise shifting.

Whnen the noise occurs, grab the stick and move it to the left or back just so slightly, see if it will stop the noise.

Jim

I don't think it's the bearings, I thought they'd sound off more in a turn and when coasting. This is more when under power.

Hi Jim - I installed the poly-graphite (hard) two part kit for the g50 mount - not OEM, and I don't think they're cab or sport (I should know) Part is PEL-RSRMTM.
I was aware that there'd be more noise but I thought I'd give'em a shot. I also noticed definite shifting improvements (ease), and new sounds that I can tune in /out / appreciate. I can hear the gentle drive train whine as I pick up RPM - this is different, louder, and just from a stand-still to half-way before I go into 2nd.

If I get on it, I don't notice it. I f I go slow, it is noticeable, almost like I was lugging the train, but not the engine (I am not below 1K rpm). Let's just say my wife asked me "what is that?" when we got a rare drive in this past Sunday.

I will definitely try what you said (if I can get some nice weather).
Work and other things are kickin my butt, otherwise I'd try and record it.

Thanks guys

When was the last time you changed/checked your transmission oil?

Not sure if this will apply to the G50, but I recently placed Ed's Derlin coupler and reset the coupler and my slight rattle noise from the shifter went away.

Like a very light tic tic tic. Like the gears are ever so slightly tapping the walls of my tranny.

Well, I was going to adjust my gate shift kit but as soon as I replaced the coupler and reset the neutral. the noise went away immediately to my surprise and joy.

Changed 2 years ago this month - haven't checked since though. Will pursue before I drive or at upcoming car inspection.

Jim - no shifter rattle here, coupler reset when I replaced the trans mounts and shifter coupler (rear) boot this past winter.

Don't know that I will be able to do much with her before we split for a getaway.
I will report back.

Thanks guys.
