key/lock codes

I have an ignition/barrel/lock unit from an SC, but no key.
I thought the key code may be imprinted on the body somewhere. There are some numbers, but mainly look like part numbers. is there anyway of finding the key code to cut a new key?
Thanks
Alan

I beleive that if you go to the dealership, they can look it up via the VIN number. I just took my to my Porsche mechanic and he had one made for me as my regular key was about to shear off. YMMV

I'll - give it a go. I have a number - not sure if it is the VIN number or not . There is a number stamped in the dash panel, which may be a VIN number. It is out of a wrecked car - body gone.

Alan,

The number stamped in the dash panel is the 'production number' not the VIN.
I think your importer can have Porsche AG tie that number back to the VIN and your key-code.
Give it a try.

Also, I would think that the salvage operator would be required to maintain a record of the VIN.

Best,
Grady

From what I understand now in order to get a stipulated lock cylinder or stipulated key you have to show proof of ownership of the car---title and registration shown to dealer.

Hmm thanks Grady. I was the salvage operator - or 2nd in line. I inherited a partly dismantled body - but never recorded the chassis number.
Might be a lost cause.
Thanks
Alan

Well I took one of my other P keys in to the corner locksmith to get a duplicate cut. Showed him the barrel unit, he reckons he can cut one without any of the above info.
We shall see. keep you posted.
Alan

OK, took a while - but I did tell him was not urgent. He cut a key from the lock from scratch, with nothing but the lock to work with. What I failed to do was ask for a price. $120. However, looking at the parts list it would cost near $700 for a new unit. So I probably am winning if I need a new ignition barrel sometime.
But it can be done without any numbers. Obviously the key code would shorten the job.
Alan
