2.7 engine case worth saving?

I haven't been able to find any info on these after doing a search. I have a bare case and it's kinda weathered. Hate to just chunk it if someone has a use for it but I'm tight for room too. Should I scrap it or try and find someone that could use it?

No Don't toss it! you might want to check the crank bore to see if it is out of specs. Oversize bearings are very expensive. Time certs can cure a lot of evils and the lighter case is really high tech.

While it wouldn't be practical to go out and buy all the parts to build an enmgine, it might be sensible to dput it together with an engine that has a bad crank case bore and they are out there.

Never throw away any Porsche parts!

Cruise over to 'parts for sale' and sell it. Someone will want it for the right price, even with the shipping, just lower it enough to sell it! It's always better than what you get for it by throwing it in the trash, + someone gets to use it again!

You can even have fedex pack it for you if you don't want the hassle.

Thanks for the info! Could you tell me what the bores should check out at? I'm a 30 year machinist so I have the tools to mic it with. Also, can you tell me what are some of the critical areas are that might need to be looked at? I'm a total newbie on these but I know Mopars very well lol

That's kinda why I started this thread. I did search a couple of forums and didn't find anyone talking about the 2.7 and thought that it might be a step child of the 911's. I heard that the mid 70's cars are not in favor that much...at least not like the early cars etc. It's the same way in the Mopar world too. The expensive highly desirable cars are mainly pre 72 with those. Throwing stuff away or scrapping isn't something that I like to do on any kind of old car or truck but last year, I came across an early 50's Chevy pickup frame and tried my best to get someone to save it but no one did and it got scrapped after sitting around for months. This is the first time that I've come into Porsche parts and I have always liked the look of the 911 but just never focused on them. I might consider looking for a project car if I wasn't already 60....so it would have to be a decent cruiser. I'm kinda tired of working on cars so much and ready to just drive the snot out of them now lol

what you absolutely need to do is find out if the bores are all in a straight line. just because they mic out, doesn't mean diddley on a 2.7 alloy case. new bearings, torque it up and the crank binds 90% of the time.

Thanks Dan. The block is weathered some and a few of the bores has some corrosion....not sure how bad yet. I'm sure it wasn't left outside but mainly due to the great Gulf Coast humidity.

I'm sorry, not to hijack, but along the same lines... I have a 2.7 with original CIS that runs well, it leaks oil (I'm working on that) but runs well. I have an opportunity to buy a set of new Mahler euro pistons and cylinders to make it a "euro" 2.7 but I've always wondered if its worth it?

I'd like to keep her 2.7, I just like her original even if its the stepchild motor. The fans already upgraded and has the hyd tensioners, reactors are gone and its backdated with SSIs. Thoughts?

only worth it if you want to run more cam than a CIS piston has clearance for or MFI. same compression as the stock pistons.

IF you find that the Crank main Bearings are 1st over, I have a set of 2nd over Case bearings I bought for my 2.7 that was line bored once for a standard crank.

Just so if anyone wants / needs to buy your cases and is afraid of the above problem. I know that these bearings are not available and were Expensive when they were. I paid close to $400 when I got these and is what I will sell them for now.

Just like any other block but in my experiences with others, if they do go out of alignment, bearings have a tendency to spin in the bore....depending how bad to go out. What I don't have any experience with is split case alloy blocks. I do have a ground straight bar for checking a big block Mopar but it's way too big for even thinking of using it on this.

This is what a crooked 2.7 mag case looks like, localized high spot wear areas and other no touch areas on the bearings.

Thanks eastbay.....bearings will look like that with other engines too. Problem is that the case I have is totally bare except for external studs etc.
