Porsche Crest Just an update

Just wanted to drop in and give an update to my progress.
So far I have the exahust system installed and the interior in.
It is really looking much better.

I did manage to break my windsheild while trying to remove the rear view mirror.... ...yeah... I guess that glass does get brittle over time... I now have a nice 15 inch horz. crack around the mirror base... and to make things worse.. I can't get the mirror back on. I guess you really have to push the mirror to get it back on that ball? Wow... I couldn't get it and I was afraid if I pushed any harder I would push right through the windsheild.
So... I guess windsheild replacement has moved up in importance a bit!

Anyway, I stopped by a couple windsheild replacement places and they all wanted about $450 for the glass.
I KNOW I've seen domestic glass for about $250 or so.
Does anyone know a good place for glass???
Please???
Anyway, I've taken pictures but they keep coming out too big!
I'll try it again

"So... I guess windsheild replacement has moved up in importance a bit! " Lee, call your insurance man...ask if you have "comprehensive". If so? "Well, you see, I was following this big truck and a rock came out of his tire, and..."

Leland,

Keep hearing from others that domestic glass is not a good idea on the 911. I have a small crack on my windshield as well and when I pull it out to repair the cracked dash it will need replacing and have been checking around.

Have heard that several people have had problems with domestic glass but no one that I know of has used it. You might check around before buying a new windshield.

Sorry to miss you in PHX but glad you got home OK! Phoenix had a small reception of brew waiting for you but after you flew through we had to drink it ourselves! Thought of you all the time ...

Joe

What are you using to look at your pictures ? I use the free one.
ArcSoft Photo Studio
That comes when you get your regular film done on a disk.
Transform/Resample.....Change the size. Save as the same name, but new size.

Sorry to hear about the windshield. But I'm glad the exhaust is in.

Did you end up using the Flow Master with the Test Pipe?

What did you do to the interior?

I've heard the reverse, that the German glass is less durable than the domestic.

Safelite (800-800-2727) installed a tinted-at-the-top piece in my car for somewhere around $225, if memory serves. If you enjoy driving the car, you will slowly sandblast the glass away, no matter who makes it or how much you spent. I say don't splurge on the German stuff unless you're worried about concours judges.

Leland, Open the yellow pages and start calling around. I picked up a windshiel for $70! with integrated antenna! Domesitc is better then OEM, Germans, while they can make a car, have problems with the glass. It becomes too brittle. Just thanks god it wasn't the Targa rear window!

Are you going to the timless rubber? Great time to do so.

Can't wait to see the pics.

I could swear that I remember seeing adversizements in P-magazines for windshields.
There are a few more places I can call... but I called a few and they all said that they can only get OEM glass and that it lists for like $1100 a pop.

Well, I'll figure something out.

Yup, the exhaust is in, and it sounds great. It sounds like a Porsche motor is supposed to sound.
It is a Flowmaster single in, dual out. Has almost a V8 rumble at idle... but you can still hear the motor noise, which I like.
The muffler shop wouldn't put in the Cat pipe, so I'll put it on myself.

I'm still waiting for my last order from Pelican which has the engine removal tool in it so I can remove the motor.

The interior has new carpet, door panels and dead pedal. Looks really good.

Paul, insurance is out because I have a $500 deductable.

More to come.

Keep shopping, Leland. Safelite did mine for a lot less than $450. Glass is a funny business. Sometimes glass guys can replace the glass, "pay your deductible" so to speak, and even GIVE you money. Perhaps not on Porsches, but the point is that glass is a funny business. Keep shopping. Domestic glass is the best in the world.

Well Leland, if all else fails- call my wrench at 919.851.5084. Ask for Tolga and tell him Dave sent ya, he'll tell you where he got glass for my friend's 930 last year. I don't remember the cost but it was not OEM, it was cheap, and it went right in no problems.

Hey Leland, check your ins, I think mine has a coverage that replaces windshield glass only due to road hazard--- no deductable.

Might be worth investigating.

Try the local PPG auto glass shop. I know for a fact PPG makes 911 windshields, as I sold a few of them when I worked at a wholesale parts place.

I agree with Dennis. Really READ that policy, Lee. Ours have a $500 deductable for collsion, but windhield glass is covered 100%. Don't just ask your agent tho...sometimes they can be "mistaken". Once I had a rifle stolen, from a gunsmith's shop...his insurance ran out (Mine only one of many stolen) and my homowners policy covered it, but only after a lawyer wrote the agent, asking the agent to come to his office and explain again why it wasn't covered. Yes, I have a different insurance agent now.

I'll call USAA anyway, but I don't think windshield replacement is included on my policy.

The engine replacement tool I'm waiting on is the one Pelican sells. It's a cradle that mounts to a floor jack and supports the bottom of the case.
Pretty sweet looking tool. (I'm not taking any chances this time.)
I'm still trying to get a couple photos of the car.

More later

Many insurance companies cover windshields with a lower deductable like others said. A friend with a '75 Carrera Targa had his glass replaced because it was pitted. The shop had some sort of "deal" I think where my friend was reimbursed for his deductable.
The shop tried 2 windshields that didn't fit before they wound up getting one from Porsche. (I don't think they made any money on this one!) This was a Targa and a '75 at that but I thought it might be relevant.

USAA

Leland- give USAA a call, they have great customer service, but when I went through this on my wife's car, I was told no. I also have a $500 deductable, so it sounds like we are in the same boat. Good luck, Roy

Lee, READ the policy...don't call 'em, READ THE POLICY. I know it's a bore to do so, but the money you save just might be your own...get out the magnifying glass if you have to, but please...READ THE POLICY. I read a policy, that's why I called the lawyer. Just to clarify things, then he sent that letter. Final result was an insurance agent going to a local gun shop with me, helping me (?) pick out my new rifle and scope.
