993 to refined for my taste.....
I have an 82 SC thats just raw and loud. Its not the fastest machine but it is a fun machine.I went and drove a 95 993 coupe this weekend that is for sale in my area.Must say,BEAUTIFUL looking expample of a 911.Nice interior, nice sound, nice car.
BUT I found it to be just to civilized and refined. The steering was well, powered. The shifting felt flimbsy and to easy, the clutch was feather light, the sound was boring and tame. The suspension felt wobbly and loose (with HandR springs) .The acceleration didnt even blow me away....? I was not to impressed. My buddy that went with me just said,Im used to my car, which is loud and raw and has all elephant racing bushing, and I guess what you would call a sporty suspension,Im used to it.No AC no radio no creature comforts.NONE!I guess just a different kind of car. Dont get me wrong would love to have a 993 AND my car but I wouldnt trade the guy straight up if he offered. His car is a 95 993 with 50K miles and some moddest mods including techart aero stuff,H and R springs and 18" RUF wheels. His will probably go up in value and mine will go down after Sebring has its way with my car! ![]() Just wondering what others might think of the 993.....I wasnt blown away like I thought I would be. His beautiful fast Angel......... ![]() ![]() My nasty and slow lil devil..... ![]() Last edited by nippy; 10-09-2011 at 08:34 AM.. |

Though I haven't yet driven a 993, I do find my recently finished RS impostor more appealing than my 88 Carrera. The sound is much more aggressive(M&K sport), and the cis injection is much more rev-happy. Totally different feel from each other.

My in-laws used to own a '96 cab which I drove many times. In outright performance it would leave my lightened SC for dead but I would not buy one as it feels too "modern" to me.

I agree, my RS is definitely not a "date" car. And I can actually put groceries in the Carrera(16 bags is my record

You guys do realize that the character of any car is in how it's setup?

Then I researched more about Porsche the brand and kind of figured the ultimate for my taste would be a 930 or a 993.The 993 didnt live up to what I thought It would be.I could easily see it being a great daily driver/sport car.But I miss the purity and rawness of my car.I am yet to try the 930,I have ridden in one but have not driven.I understand also its a different beast. Yes, a well set-up 944 would run rings around both the 993s and the hotted up SC/Carreras.

beyond the setup is the weight, and the speed taken over a particular course
if you want to go fast the 993 is it, or if you want better control and handling on a bumpy, twisty road but an early 911 offers a fun, raw feel at much lower speeds I was able to compare 2 911s and a Boxster S over and over again on a rough, bumpy and very twisty road near my house - I did that course in one car, parked it, and got in another, all within minutes of the previous run. The Boxster S was way faster (uphill or downhill) and had much more aplomb, but the 911 was more fun. I did not own a 993 but I'm pretty sure the same would be true from my subsequent driving experiences. On a race course, you will win in a 993 over a 911. |

Nippy,
Put a 3.6 in your car and it will really transform it! I have Bill Verburg's old 3.6 in mine and it worked wonders. Then backdated my car and lost a good 300 pounds off of it and its a totally different machine. Like Bill says, its all in how its set-up, but you can cheat a bit! ![]()

That's true. I called my '95 993 the "bloat-mobile" since that characterized its handling with the stock suspension. I wasn't in love with the 6-speed gearbox, either. Still, it was a pretty nice car.

Exactly. I own both a 993 C4S and a lightened, chipped 86 911. Both cars have upgraded suspensions. The 993 outperforms the 911 in every way, but both cars are a blast to drive. The C4S is just easier to drive fast, and there's a bit less drama.

As has been said many times in the past, I think it depends on whether you want a DD or a fun week end car. I don't think I'd want mine as my only transportation(have 2 other vehicles) but as an occasional ride, it is great.
I have driven a friends Cayman S and found it much like any other car. It is an autmatic though which doesn't help. It looks good but the drive is to ordinary.

I have both. My Targa weighs a bit less than 2600lbs, and it is pushing 270HP. It is pretty well developed in the suspension and brake dept. My 993 is about the same HP, and not as flat on the tq curve, but it comes on strong north of 4K. It weighs in excess of 3000lbs. You can do the math and see which is "quickest", but the 993 is faster. It is also an amazing car right out of the box, as it is 100% stock, but is extremely capable in the mountains. Did I mention is has good A/C?
![]() Both have a place in the garage, IMO. The 993 is getting it's development work started this winter-new Bilsteins and ROW shocks, bushings and exhaust are sitting in the garage waiting for me to get busy. They are both sweet cars. Choosing one would be tough. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I owned a 97 C4S with the aero kit, hardback seats and a boat load of options. I loved it. It is definitely a more refined ride. Easier to drive. I also have had 930 turbos. The 930 can take a little while to master - even then there is more to learn. The AWD in the C4S is very good - it pulls you around a corner where the 930 slides more.
Having said that, I still am more of a 930 guy. However, I am currently looking for a long hood project. Just classic and raw. If I could afford it - I would like to buy a 98 Turbo -last of the air cooled 78 930 heavily modified 10 BMW M5 10 Cayenne GTS |
