I used to think euro h4s were a must (and on longhoods, I still feel this way), but have come to really appreciate the period-correct as-delivered look of painted sugar scoops on 78-86 cars.

Beautiful car!

That's almost ironic, in this case. One car I was considering (a beautiful '74 S) sold to a guy in The Netherlands before I could see it in person.

And even more ironic, I couldn't find a buyer in the USA for my 240Z at my asking price, but sold it to a person in Norway instead.

I don't mind the sugar scoops too badly (especially with good E-code lights in them), but the H4s just look better to me. Might be a while before that happens, I think I might want to get a Seine shifter first.

what a sweet looking ride....very well taken care of....great color combo....dang, I better stop because I'm getting jealous.

Corrections and updates, as I continue to learn about my car.

I stated early on that the top end was done by John Walker. That was not correct. While I have several receipts showing that JW has worked on the car, the top end job was done at Paul Weir's shop in 1998. The car has gone 40k since then.

It has an Odyssey battery with Rennline hold-down (w/kill switch). I also found record of a factory short shift kit - will need to verify if it is still in the car, as the euro H4s that were apparently added in 2002 (per Pelican receipt) are no where to be found.

I am apparently the 8th owner.

Hi arne. I hope u leave her stock..she certainly is beautiful in factory clothes! love the tricolor interior...kinda hard to find, imo.

nesslar 11-06-2011 04:26 AM

Like it! I'd go with a duck, H4s, and agree about the Z vs. 911; no comparison. I had a 260Z and really liked it though; just not enough motor, about 150 HP IIRC, but stock. Really like the white, for sure! Nice car...might be a shnort shifter. Does that knob tighten down to a ridge/ring that is integral to the shifter?

The tri-color isn't stock, stock was all brown. The ivory leather is difficult to clean, and has a few small stains and such now. I'm pretty certain it will revert to the original all brown at some point. I don't anticipate any major changes to the car at this point, it's already set up quite nicely for my purposes.

Yes, there is a ring on the lever just under the knob. I did a little search and found that may indicate the SSK. I'll do some measurements to confirm, but it does seem likely now.

Still learning. What fun!

Read about the famous unfused dash lighting circuit yesterday. Figured that since I had several inline fuse holders in my stash of electrical parts in the garage, I'd remedy that issue today.

Looked under the dash this afternoon, found that it was already done. Yet another example of the care this car has received over the years. Still can't believe that no one installed a Seine GSK in it, that's high on my list...

Arne2 12-29-2011 07:28 PM

More updates. This past week I've added headlight relays, and the shifter fairy sprinkled the car with Ed's coupler bushings and a Seine GSK. Either one alone is nice, but the two together (along with a new cup and shaft bushing) transform the shifting. Great stuff! BTW, installing the Seine confirmed that it does have a factory short shift in it.

A brown leather shift knob/boot has been ordered. Next up will either be H4s, or some more subtle radio to replace the far-too-bling Kenwood that the PO installed.

Great looking car! Did you do the seine install yourself? How did it go? A seine is on the top of my list so looking for some recent experience & advice. Thx. Oh, my 2 cents says leave the seats, very nice combo color & unique. I think white instrument faces would look perfect with them!

Arne2 12-30-2011 10:18 AM

Yes, I did the GSK install myself. I think I may yet want to tweak the gate adjustment, but even now, it's all good. Wasn't a hard job. The toughest part may actually be removing the console with A/C controls. Even opening up the hole in the housing to make clearance with the factory short shift kit wasn't hard. (The instructions say to use power tools, but I just used a rat-tail file by hand and that worked fine.)

A visit from the parts fairy

Yes, the parts fairy stopped by my place while I was at work today. :D I know there are some sugar scoop supporters here, but I couldn't live with them long-term. I will probably paint the trim rings over the weekend.

Painted trim rings...

OK, that wasn't so hard....

Chiffon white is a fantastic color. The first 911 I almost bought was an 83SC in Chiffon white. Wish I'd bought that car instead of the 964.....

Arne2 01-21-2012 06:21 PM

Chiffon was definitely not on my A list when I started shopping, but it has grown on me a lot. Very subtle, but yet not common.

porwolf 01-22-2012 07:34 PM

I know there are sugar scoop fans out there. Even in Germany! Where they have to get special adapters to make them legal there. But I think the Euro H4 enclosures are the natural head lights for the 911. So much better integrated and smother looking. My 79 SC still has the original sugar scoops, but the H4's are ready to go in!

Arne2 01-27-2012 07:54 PM

The H4s were nice with chrome ring, but much better with the painted trim. I should mention that paintscratch.com did a pretty fair job mixing the spray can of Chiffon White. Probably a closer match than was done years back when the tail was removed.

Football be damned, today was too nice, so we went for a drive! Great weather, traffic was very light, and the roads to the coast are way more fun than freeways.

Beautiful shot of the car on the Oregon coast.

Could you post a picture of the shift kit installed, as well as a list of the parts necessary to replace the sugar scoops?
