Discovered failing CV joints a couple of weeks ago, so I picked up a pair of new drive axles for the car. Funny noise now gone.

Also, shipped my Fuchs off middle of last month to be re-anodized. Been rolling on borrowed wheels since mid-Feb. (Thanks to endoquest!) Looks like they should be heading back my way soon, should have them back later this week. They will be clear anodized in the classic pattern, I will paint the black accents myself. Here's a couple of pics of the interim steps.

Paint stripped and de-anodized:

Polished and ready to re-anodize:

Welcome. Your new Carrera looks great. You made a wise choice going with a 3.2. You will not be disappointed. Also, to correct a previous post, the front spoiler is indeed on the car. Enjoy.

Finished my wheel/tire project today and bolted them on.

Wheels - factory 16" (6 & 7), 25mm spacers on the rear. Stripped, polished, clear anodized, and painted in the classic style.

Tires - Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3, factory 205/55 and 225/50 sizes.

Not many miles on them yet, but I'm very happy with the results. I'd had my wheels painted to simulate this look for some time now, and while that was OK, the looks of real anodizing is far better.

Too soon to review the tires, but so far they seem quiet, and not harsh. Actual handling and grip testing will need to wait until I get the mold lube worn off.

Looks REALLY good!

Since our last episode...

In May I removed the short-shift and reverted to stock. Kept the Seine gate kit.

In August, I added a 3.2 grill emblem.

Then last month I installed bump steer spacers and did a bunch of maintenance—oil, filter, plugs, cap, rotor & valve adjustment.

Today I installed a set of side stripes. Many thanks to No Bad Days Graphics.

Very nice progress so far! I also love how the wheels came out, might have just convinced me to keep my fuchs and refinish them similarly. Quick question, i love the door stripes, are those available for sale? They look great!

Arne2 10-29-2014 07:37 AM

I had the stripes custom made by Pelican member Joe Bob. Here's one of his ads:

Nice P-story Arne. Interested to know why you removed SS? (I've been thinking about putting one in.) Is there down side?

Some downsides, in my experience. I bought the car with the factory SS already installed, and decided I wanted to try a normal shifter for two reasons - I felt the shift feel of the SS was quite notchy, but more importantly in my car the shorter lever throw made it impossible to adjust the linkage to where the reverse lockout was reliable. The potential sweet-spot of fore-aft adjustment where the travel forward was enough to allow the lock-out cam to trip but still not have the lever tab hit on the fifth gear gate tab was miniscule. I was never able to adjust it so that I could both get it into fifth gear and have the lock-out work properly.

After going back to stock, the shift feel is smoother, and (properly adjusted as it is now) the reverse lock-out works perfectly every time. I frankly did not really notice the longer travel, the difference doesn't seem to be all that great. As a side benefit, the shifter doesn't seem to transmit as much noise into the cabin. I thought that was my imagination, until my wife commented on it as well. The car is simply easier to shift, and more pleasant to drive now.

So yes, I'm totally happy w/o the SS. The normal unit just works better for me in my car. YMMV, though.

"Simply easier to shift and more pleasant to drive." Just the way it was intended to be from the factory.

Began the process today to change the interior back to the original brown. Found a pair of correct 81-84 manual Sport seat cores, so not only am I changing the interior color back to stock, I'm upgrading the seats as well.

Had Tony (Autobahn Interiors) do them with French seams (triple stitched) instead of piping, for better durability. (Piping takes a beating on the big bolsters of Sport seats.)

Rear jump seats to match are not here yet, but soon. Bolted one in tonight. Wonderful!

Very nice

would you mine sharing your source for anodizing the wheels?

Cairo94507 06-04-2015 05:00 AM

Absolutely love the new seats and color. You are doing perfect changes to your car - love it.

Arne2 06-06-2015 08:54 PM

Finished the seat install today, after FedEx delivered the rears. Lubed and shimmed the sliders so they work nice. Totally happy with these!

Hi Arne,

The looks great, well done!

Just wondering what the "funny noise" sounded like prior to you changing axles?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Harry.

Mine sounded like a dog growling.

I'm guessing  they were pretty far gone at the time. I replaced them with new ones from our host and have been great ever since.

Rhythmic ticking or clicking, especially under acceleration, obviously in time with wheel rotation.
