3.2 won't start on the key

my 3.2 1984 has decided not to start on the key.

but will start with a gentle push of 6 to 8 feet and away she goes and then will continue to start up to 4hrs later.
but left over night no .

i have tried new dme relay, new igniton switch + dme.

help any one i just do not understand why she will only start with a push/bump start.

steve

Does the starter turn, click or otherwise show life?

Cold start issues could be pressure, the circuit or fuel pump......

The starter turns the engine but it won't start? There should be no difference whether the starter is turning it over or the transmission.

How does the starter sound on your car compared to another 84?

Have you checked the cold start fuel pressure? Have you checked the cold sart components?

More imporantly do you have a Bentley manual that contains the test values?

sounds like an internal short in one of the battery cells that is slowly draining it over night.

battery can be cranked hard and show little to no drain batt does not flatten even if left for a month.
batt only goes dead if i crank it to death like any other batt.

Read my recent post on the yellow starter wire that is on terminal 50.

You could try disconnecting the yellow wire from the relay in the smugglers box and give it a try.

do you have a voltmeter? If so, go out and test the voltage on your battery while the ignition is OFF.

Return and post your results.

Sounds like ignition switch is faulty. When in the start key position (starter cranking) you should have spark (sounds like you do not) but when key is in "on" position you have spark (thats why it starts and runs when pushed) but wont start when cranking. Check your ignition switch to make sure no wires are pulled out (or not making good contact all the time). you may even find a melted wire (on the back of the switch) thats shorting out your ignition while key is in start (crank) position. My "86" has a bunch of wires on the key switch and I have replaced a melted wire (over heated due to resistance because of poor contact). I think you need to check this.

fully recharged batt over night

still no start.

anyone please.

also if the fly wheel sensors we broken would it still start with a push as it does ???

Speed sensor. It's used only at start up and signals the dme and they like to go.

If you buy the BMW one, you'll get it for half the cost. right here on pelican. good luck and i hope you have skinny arms!
