Foil engine sound pad?
Anyone put in one of the foil engine pads?
Are they as good as the write up? Do they look weird in the car? My engines out so I'm replacing the original one. Thanks '83 SC (motor in the hospital for the winter) |

Personally, I'm not crazy about the foil look in an otherwise stock engine compartment. If you've got the hot-rod look going on, then that's different.
Do a search on "engine sound pad", you'll find plenty of pictures.

I put a foil sound pad in the engine bay while rebuilding my motor. I think it looks OK (engine bay is black - not stock). It didn't fit quite right and I had to make a few minor cuts/mods to get back wall brackets to stick through correctly.

I placed an Ultimate Sound Pad, I like it it really cleaned up the engine bay and love how quiet it is. While I was there I replaced the foam blocks with some 7/8" Foam Pipe insulator.

I have one, the shop that rebuilt my car after the fire put it in. You can't really see any of it behind all of the CIS stuff in my car. It does add a little light in my opinion, and the hemmed edges on the pad itself are nice.

I put in the cheaper of the two foil sound pads, fit perfect, tacked it in with 3M Super 90 spray adhesive. Looks better IMO than the thick black factory thing. Probably throws a little more light, probably does a little less on sound deadening than the other options- its negligible at best but better than nothing.

I haven't pulled the old one out yet .. so haven't seen the foam blocks.
What's up with the blocks? Do they degrade and also need replacing or better stuff is available? Thanks '83 SC SSI's, euro fuel dist, 964 cams in the rebuild plan. |

I did the thicker foil pad this past winter when my engine was out. I think it looks fine, actually brightens up the "dark hole" that is the back of the engine. Bob at AppBiz recommended not gluing it in, not necessary. I agree now. Do not get excited that you'll notice a noise reduction. Foam blocks are found in that little gap in the back where the shock towers and firewall come together. You likely have something stuffed in there from the factory. Messy, dirty, horrible area to work in without the engine out, (and bad even then). They basically "stuff" the gaps where various hoses or wires need to route. Leave the old in and don't think about it is my opinion.

I just replaced the original sound pad this morning on my 89 because the engine is out.I used the black OEM one which i bought on the classifieds for $60.00 and i left the foam blocks in place.
They still seemed in good shape,so i left them. The OEM sound pad had the holes already cut out on both sides where the AC hoses go through the firewall, something i didn't need because the whole AC system is removed but nevertheless it was a pretty good fit. I would imagine the foil ones to be easier to install, especially if the engine is still in place ... Cheers ! Phil

Meaning what? That there won't be much of a reduction or it'll be lots?

Compared to not having one, it is day and night. I could literally here my passenger with out asking them to raise their voice over the engine sound, beautiful as it might be but a recent trip from rennsport reunion was quite pleasant.
As far as the blocks, you can place the OEM blocks but why bother no one will see it unless the engine is removed or under the car. Just use the water pipe insulator foam from HD and cut to size and shove it in there ![]()

Engine noise
My comment meant that in my case, I cannot detect a noticeable sound reduction. I already had a pad in place before, it was just loose, old, junky with pieces falling off. I simply think the car (stock 87 in my case with a cat bypass) is just loud, no getting around it, cannot compare to any modern car at my house. A new pad out back didn't make a noticeable improvement in my opinion. It looks much better and I like that, don't get me wrong. Windows down usually means the stereo gets loud and forget about listening to talk radio!

Nope, the Ultimate Sound Pad offered by our Host.
Initially I had the factory pad but it was trashed, I removed it and by mistake placed dynamat type material, unfortunately it started to melt and made a huge drip mess onto my trans and down my chassis ![]() I left the dynamat stuff and used 3M adhesive spray on top of it and placed the Ultimate Sound pad. I don't know maybe the combo of the dynamat plus the pad really insulated it well for me, Very happy with the results ![]()

I bought an Ultimate sound pad directly from AppBiz a couple of years ago. Am planning to install soon when I do an engine pull. It was my understanding these were made with the three layers to "look like" the original black sound pad. i.e. with the foil facing the firewall and the black foam toward the engine Is that the way you installed yours? Anyone know the correct way for sure?

I did it with the foil facing the engine, for heat resistance, the other way around would seem odd and a waste of foil material benefits but I could be wrong, but sure did clean her up
