Project 911 Help
Back in 1992 I built a 1973 911T for European Car magazine. I still have that car. I haven't done much with it since 1992 except drive it. Ok, I added the French headlights and the ttg lights on the front but not much else.
It's time to revisit this car. It's going to be a street car with very limited track use. Or, it might be a track car with very limited street use. I'm still not sure on that one. All of the original articles are here. What would you do with this car? Richard Newton Facebook Page |

Less brakes, more gas!

um... not much. Did you go with 26 or 28s in the rear t-bars? I might ditch the weltmeister stuff and go with a 3 point front strut bar, and tarret or smart racing gear for the sways, but you wont notice a driving difference. Might look to go stiffer in both front and rear, but if you want to run Sebring a softer setup may be desirable. Get a good set of sport seats. The ones you have now are pretty flat and I expect you slide around some. Shocks might need a re-fresh.
After that ... well car looks awesome! Hope to see you around at the track! -Michael

Sebring and Homestead are my home tracks. I have a set of 21 and 23 torsion bars. Will they be too stiff for the street?

Come drive with us at Sebring. Long noses are getting more rare at the track and air cooled cars in general are getter more scarce. Unless it is a concours car...use it like it was meant to be used!

I'm going to start this deal the right way. Always start with the tires. As true as that may be I'm really starting with the tires because I got a super deal last year on these tire. I love it when it comes together without a real plan.
![]() I'm running 6" on the front and 7" Fuchs on the rear. I've always used 205/55-16 tires on all four corners and never had an issue. This is one place where I'm sticking with what works. Richard Newton |

I had a heck of a time on those tires and my car is 2375 lbs. Just could not get enough heat in them.

![]() I've had this Weltmeister strut brace on my 911 since '92. I've run numerous track events and Solo 2 events since that time. I've never had a problem with it. The Urban Legend is that these are terrible and that you need to cut a larger hole where the strut goes through the bracket. Has anyone actually had a problem with this? I don't mean that you heard about this problem but rather you actually had a problem on your own 911. Richard Newton Newton's Law |

You need to get rid of that thing or else do the modification. If you take a minute to think about how the suspension moves you should realize that.

Most people are recommending a spherical bearing as the best upper mount. Thoughts?

I like mine. Car feels much smoother and softer since the suspension is moving without much friction.
The harshness should be mainly controlled by springs and dampers rather than the bushings. Spherical bushings, even weather sealed, will wear out eventually. Quicker than rubber will. But your alignment settings will stay more stable around a lap. The bearings were really not designed to take axial loads as they will see in the strut top but if you have a big enough bearing it should be fine. There is no other really good option available for the strut top. You could design something custom that was better but it would be much more expensive.

![]() I'm heading over to Sebring this week. I think I'll catch up with the guys from Klub Sprort and get some thoughts about suspension for my project. Richard Newton |
