CA Smog Test #'s for my '88
So I received my new to me '88 Targa last night via Reliable Carriers.
I took it to the smog station this morning with the plan to get it passed and then registered - BUT a failed test killed those plans. Here's the results. ![]() (Sorry the image is sideways - I tried rotating and saving but it didn't help.) In hindsight I should probably have driven it much more before taking it in, but the NO at 25mph (the only failure) was very high. I don't know if that would have that much effect on it or not. Also, I should mention this car just spent the last 5 years in Colorado (high altitude) but don't know if that would have any effect or not. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Smog.
Hope this helps:
![]() Try another test with a 220 oil temp...... I pull the front oil cooler fan connection, and run the temp up to 230+. It seems to help. Good luck, Gerry

If you car is running too hot, NO is going to be high.

The guy testing it mentioned he could feel the heat when he pulled the sniffer out of the exhaust.
Any obvious things I should try first? Like I said, I don't think it's been driven much lately. Would it possibly help to just drive it more and then take it back? Thanks

Hi

High NO = Look for a vacuum leak. Your engine is sucking air from somewhere it shouldn't be.

Carrera intakes are known to come loose.

Look under the drivers seat by the DME. There is a brown wire that may be disconnected.
From my reading it is for California and Japanese cars to pass emissions.
