No need to split the case to replace studs. BUT, you should do all of them.

yeah, when you go to reassemble that side, more will probably pull. you really need an alignment jig to drill and insert all 12 studs or they will porcupine and you will have trouble getting the head assembly back on and that may cause them to pull due to the uneven stress. normally this is done in a mill with the case split. yay! must be a 2.7 eh?

old topic - addressed before - do a search on the engine forum
- short answer is you can now get a jig-drill kit from stomsky(?) that will let you do it without full teardown in my case - i just sold the car .

Just find a good 3.0 or bigger and bolt it in. You'll probably spend less.
Looking at your garage it shouldn't be too difficult for you.

perfectly good 2.7s , 10/10 compression 10/10 leak down , why would you replace just because 2 studs won't torque.

Just an option, if the cost of doing the case (all new studs and certs) properly gets excessive. You did mention the word "Crap" earlier.

if money is really no object ............
![]() - i have 2 - 3.2's in storage - both known good engines from '88 & '89 wrecks with carfaxes - plus a rebilt 915 - local pickup only zipcode 95635 and bring cash and for $100/hr, i will help you install it if you bring your car but. i suspect we would not be posting for stud fix solutions if we had lots of cash to throw around - we'd just take the car to our local "best porsche fixer" & ask how much to write the check for .

exactly the point
unless you can do it yourself - just pay the price to your l;ocal fixer
and enjoy the enhanced value of your car once it is back on the road - but the reality is we can spend $10K on an engine in a $15K car - and still only have a $15K car I see worn out carreras with 250K on the odometer all the time at asking prices reflecting prices on cars with perfect rebuilt engines - like the man says - if you have to ask the price - you can't afford the car

Sad to learn of your situation....At your point I would either :
1) spend significant money and repair present crankcase and consider upgrade pistons and cams. 2) Purchase a proven 3.0 (compression test and stud verification) used unit. Both about the same price point. |
