I'm Happy to report my plugs wires were sparking today!
To some, it may seem strange that I am happy I saw my plug wires sparking today. I'm happy because I just ordered new wires and one of my friends told me it was a total waste of money.
I just acquired the car in October and I want everying to be new and running perfect. Plug wires are one thing I wanted to replace because I have no idea when they were last changed - it could have been 38 years ago. I feel that if I do major tuneup work now, I will know when everything was last done and I can start from there. I know I have heard a few zaps/sparks but I have never seen it happen. Even at night, I didn't see anything. Someone suggested holding the wires and I might feel a slight buzz - I didn't want to do that. But today, I noticed two wires sitting on top of each other and so I moved one of the wires so there would be a little space between them. I did this when the car was running and one plug wire immediately started arcing to to other wire. I knwe I wasn't wasting money! ![]() |

It is nice to know that you are not just throwing money at it uselessly. I changed mine out earlier this year, kind of in the same mind as you, just go thru it and make sure that all the old questionable stuff is replaced. I used the Beru wires too. Once I got over the sticker shock I was feeling pretty good about the work done. That good feeling lasted less than six months, then the car developed a miss. It was running rough . Most noticeable in the lower RPM range . The problem seemed electrical and ended up being the new spark plug wires. I switched out the wires from a project car that I am working on. It still had old OEM wires. Both cars had new Dist. caps so I switched out the caps and wires and viola smooth powerful running is restored.
So now I have this almost new set of wires that cause a miss, and need to get a set to replace them and don't know quite what to do about getting reliable wires. Any suggestions here? You might want to hang on to the old wire set, the end pieces can be reused. I sure wish I had. Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 12-26-2011 at 07:31 AM.. |

Some re-use the ends, just buying the ignition wire in bulk, reported to be inexpensive and reliable. I got Magnecors from Pelican to replace the original Beru and I have no complaints. $160 for Magnecor vs. $260 for OEM Beru.

Any opinions about Genuine Porsche Plug wires and would there be any issues buying brand new NOS Porsche Wires.
I found a place that specializes in NOS Porsche stuff and they have a set of Genuine Porsche wires for about $190. My only issue is that I worry they are brand new but 35 years old. I'd be interested in hearing comments. I want the stock look and don't want any red or blingy wires so my options are limited. |

Don't think I would go with the NOS. Its the rubber and plastic materials that perish with age. They may be brittle or prone to failure. Just My opinion. Interested in what others think.
