Number designations

My next door neighbor just brought home a brand spankin new Porsche Targa. Its no SC, but I got to tell ya, it is spectacular!
After getting the tour. I asked if there was a number designation for a car like this. He said he thought it was a 911 targa. I had thought the newer models had different model numbers like 996 or something.
Now I am confused, I think I have a basic understanding of the 911, 930, 914, 924, 928, and so on, but where can I go to get the number designations for the later models or all models for that matter.
Also, is there a number designation for the Boxster?

The Boxster is a 986.
Can't tell you where all this is written down in one spot.
The 911/930 run ended in '89 followed by the 964 (turbo=965), followed by the 993/993tt, then the 996/996tt.
There's a bunch of numbers all right.

You are correct. It's a 996 Targa. I thought people finally stopped calling them "911"s when they got to the 996.
I could see why the 964 and 993 got called 911's but the 996 seems so far removed to me.

I would still consider it a 911, but the number that you are thinking of is as already stated 996.

Porsche still calls them 911's. The "911" badging on my ducktail is from the Millenium edition 996.

Thanks for the info. Interesting note, after looking the car over again I realized that there are no markings any where on the car. No Targa , no Porsche no any thing!
