Bought some stone guards, can you help?
I bought some stone guards for my 85 Targa, no turbo here, from our host. Does anyone have details on where to accurately apply them? Any help would be great so that I don't screw it up.

you install them pretty much like window tint. i used a lean soapy mix. i scooted it around until i felt it looked right, and then squeegied out the moisture to stick it in place.

I used a small piece of masking tape to mark how high my rockers sat on the side of the car so that the bottom of the stone guard went below this level. I then lined up the curved line of the wheel well with the curvature of the stone guard and marked at the top with another piece of tape where the top of the guard was going to rest. As the previous poster stated soapy water sprayed on the back of the guard and the side of the car will allow you to move the guard around to the right spot on the car. Then squeegy out the water. Also look at some pictures of other cars to see where they line up.

I measured the height on both sides and used masking tape to mark the top of the spot where the decal starts. On my latest 911, I bought a set of magnetic stone guards. I plan on doing a review when it gets warmer out.

They should just tuck under the rubber part of rocker panel and follow the curve of fender flair as best as possibly. It will likely not fit perfectly.

Got the stone guards from our host a few days ago. So I'm looking at the area where they go and notice the "cap" where the torsion goes.
Am I crazy, but is that gonna hinder my effort?

They go over the torsion bar cap.

There is good advice above and I second all of it. The odd thing is that the bottom of the guard does not line up with the rubber moulding on the car, and you have to stick a triangular portion of the guard under the rubber. In other words, the "factory" stone guard is made in a shape that won't fit the car without jockeying it around a fair amount.
Don't be afraid to use something that won't make scratches to pry out the rubber moulding so you can work. The stone guards fit differently on each side of my car, but I can't see both sides at once, so who cares. I like them.

I just did these but needed to step up to the Turbo guards as the smaller ones didn't overlay well with what was there from the factory for 30 years. The faded lines and such just couldn't be covered to my liking so the larger ones covered all the uglies. As stated, the base of the guards just don't line up with the rockers when the curve is followed. I just trimmed mine with an razor after installation, worked just fine.

So the black half circles that are above the black trim should just pop off and I place the sticker over the cap? I'm assuming that they are just rubber?

Ok, how do I deal with these rubber gaskets for the torsion tube? Do they pop out? Or should I just put the stone guards right above the gasket???

Remove the rocker endcaps.
Slide the rubber rocker trim towards the front of the car. Clean area well (duh) Make the torsion bar cover and seal to fit as flush as possible with the fender. Apply stoneguard over torsion bar cover and seal. Lower edge should be hidden by the rubber trim, rear edge should be as close as possible to the front edge of the fender lip. Slide rubber trim back and reattach endcaps.

I bought mine from Dan at MagnaGrafik Home - Porsche Graphics, Magnetic Decals for Porsche, Magnetic Hood Stripes, Magnetic Stone Guards, Carbon Fiber Graphics, Vinyl Graphics, Porsche 911 Carrera Boxster Cayman Turbo Decals, Martini Racing Stripes, 911 914 930 935 944 964 96
Made in Ohio. Great guy. I recommend the product and the company highly. In my mind, having owned cars with the traditional stone guards, the magnetic ones are the only way to go. They look great and can be removed or installed in seconds. No more waxing around decals. ![]() Last edited by mystro; 01-30-2012 at 10:57 AM.. |

So what happens if you need to access the torsion bar cover and the vinyl stone guard is on there?
