replaceing starter switch and steering lock mechanism?
Cannot get the old switch with steering lock to let go from steering column! What is holding it in there? Is there a trick to this? From the one I'm replacing with there isn't anything that should be holding it in. This is 78sc. Again replacing keyed starter switch and steering lock assemble with newer one.

I assume you removed the two break away screws and unplugged all the connectors, but did you remove the two rivets holding the small plate to the dash? If you don't remove the rivets to allow the plate to move, it's too difficult to push the mechanism back through the hole, at the proper angle, to remove it through the back.
There is also a set screw in the steeing column that needs to be backed out to allow the shaft which locks the wheel to be removed. It's accessed from under the dash and does not need to be removed (in fact, don't remove it as it's a PITA to replace.) As I recall, it takes a small angled allen wrench or a special allen head tool to remove. I know I improvised to get mine out.

And everything is easier if you remove the knee pad on the dash, 2 8mm nuts

It's also easier if you remove the steering wheel so you can get under the dash. The setscrew is slightly to the right of the steering column. Is your key out so the lock is retracted?

+1 on all of the above, especially the riveted plate. Spent quite a long time wiggling, jiggling and swearing before a search here revealed that secret...

Well its been a wonderful day trying to remove this piece. Still having problems with the allen set screw which holds the steering lock mechanism. I have started drilling that out. Dam thing is hard and its taking forever. Will have a go at it when drill is charged up again. Simplist things sometimes take all day. Make you feel real stupid too!!!!!!!!!
