Gearbox Oil

Is Swepco 201 the best oil for my 915 box, hope to get the box back from the repairers next week so need to think about getting oil for it.
Cheers Dave.

You might want to do a search,
use "Swepco" and "Kendall".

Lot's of opinions.

I have heard great things about both kendall and swepco. However when I changed my gear box oil I did not have time to have either shipped to me, and no local shop carried it. So I went with Lucas, its been good, Ive had no issues thus far. For my next change which is coming up I will be going for the swepco as per recommendations here.

Regards
Dave

Some topics get beat to death here. Use the search function and that will keep the groans down to a minimum. The oil topic is one that is overly replied too

That aside...welcome to Pelican and you have to show pix of your car!!!

I may be asking for it, but I went with Redline and it works great. I originally went with the basic off the shelf oil from Auto Zone but the transmission felt 'soupy'. I changed to Redline after a few hundred miles and noticed quite a difference.

"Works Great" in the context of a transmission oil discussion typically means "Shifts Smoothly". Redline provides buttery smooth shifting in a wide variety of transmissions and transaxles. Unfortunately, smooth shifting has little if any correlation to the oils more important role of protecting gearbox internals.

Redline is lacking in the area of EP (extreme pressure) protection, with even VW owners experiencing VERY premature R&P failure when using their oil. Redline has recently added "Not for Hypoid R&Ps" to their sales literature.

Even those Porsches and VW models that don't have hypoid R&Ps specify the use of hypoid gear lube, for maximum EP protection.

Don't let the snarky comments rub you the wrong way. Like engine oil, gear oil is a touchy subject of debate that comes up quite often. Ask a less debate-able question for your next inquiry and you'll find people aren't so quick to roll their eyes!

To echo Geary's comments, you also need to specify whichRedline you're talking about. Because even if you use a Redline with EP, as in shockproof heavy weight gear oil, you're not guaranteed it won't shift like poop. I had SPHW in my 915 when I got it (looks like liquid red lipstick) and 3rd gear was a crap shoot. I put in the obligatory Kendall and then the Swepco (210 for racing) and it magically fixed 3rd gear block-outs.

I know Geary said DON'T use shifting as a measure of success. But my point is the oils I chose to replace the lipstick are both tried and true 915 gear oils. So my example points out that they have the right additives and enable proper shifting to occur.

It's not just Pelikaners who are fanatical about their lubricant choices. Talk to some road cyclists about how they lube their chains, and watch the fur fly.

Thanks for posting! The search Nazis always go crazy but so what. This post got me thinking about my own car and I ordered a gallon of Swepco 201 from Pelican today. It may surprise some that not all of us are searching. Reading other people's posts can help someone out like me who wasn't even thinking about my transmission. This post got me thinking.

Vern

I searched the Redline website and it states the following:
"MTL, MT-85 & MT-90 are not for use in differentials with hypoid gears" - (These are some of the other typs of oil they sell..)

For a 915 transmission we would purchase the "75W90 NS GL-5 Gear Oil" which makes the following claims:
*Designed for transmissions and transaxles - helps to slow synchros for easier shifting across a broad temperature range
*Popular in Ferrari, Porsche and Subaru transaxles

To each his own...I was able to find this locally so i went with it.
