Wayne's New Book: How to Rebuild and Modify Your 911 Engine...
Hi everyone. As you know, I'm am diligently working on my next book, "How to Rebuild and Modify Your 911 Engine." It should be out in November/December of 2002, just in time for Christmas.
For those of you who are rebuilding your engine before then, I am thinking of offering a pre-release copy. This would be a double-sided, ring-binder, black and white copy of the book, that I would have duplicated at Kinkos. It would include all of the first revision text and photos, but in B&W, not color. The cost to put this together and have Kinko's duplicate all 400-500 pages would probably be around $99. I would include a copy of the engine book (sent to you via mail when it arrives in November) in this price. The retail price for the full-color book is going to be $29.95. Is this worth doing, or is it a waste of time? I've had many people tell me that they will be rebuilding their engines in the next six months, and would like an advance copy of the book. Worth it, or not? Please let me know... -Wayne

I do plan on an upgrade\rebuild in about a year, so for me it would be good timing. I hope it will cover how I can turn my 2.0T motor into something useful!

I'll likely buy a copy of your color book later however I'll make the comment that a "cheap" (not $99!) B&W loose leaf copy would be just the thing for a "shop copy" to get dirty. However, as you well know, loose leaf copies make piracy rather easy. I know of at least one technical publication that charges more for loose leaf copies; I suspect offsetting the cost of piracy is the reason. Cheers, Jim

Wayne, count me as a customer...unless, of course, you try to make it similar in price to the book on the RS everybody raves about. Limited edition numbers, a coffee table book. Nope, not for me. But price it right, make it as informative as your 100 projects book? I'll buy it in a heartbeat. The earlier $100 offer? I certainly wouldn't bid higher, and I'd hope for a lower price...much lower. Not all of us have won "the lottery of life", as a prominent liberal politician put it. I don't begrudge anybody making money, capitalism is great! But, I do have to budget, allocate my dollars spent...

I'm in too. Right now the heads are off. I have to remove the cylinders, studs and then begin the rebuild. I'll take this book too on top of 101 projects, BA's handbook, Turbo Factory Manuals, Haynes and a borrowed Bentley for Carrera. Not to mention the tech article written by Leland but also numerous posts. Can't have too much information in this endeavor.
Best

i'd buy one.........i don't know whether it has broad based appeal, but to a small segment of the population (board members??), it would probably have value.
perhaps it would help raise some pre-production funds to keep the long term project on track. |

Hmm, I guess I wasn't clear. I will be now:
- The book will cost $29.95 when it comes out - It will be published in COLOR by MBI in November/December of 2002. - It will be complete in the color version - The $99 looseleaf copy will be the only thing available until the color version comes out (Nov/Dec). - The looseleaf copy will be a Kinkos reproduction (500+ pages not laid out in book form, but printed Word Doc with pics). - The only purpose of the looseleaf copy is to put the book into the hands of the people who need it in the short term (prior to Nov/Dec 2002). - People who buy the looseleaf copy will receive a real copy of the book in Nov/Dec, making the looseleaf cost about $70. I figure it will cost me about $30-$40 just to have Kinkos produce and bind the copies... Cool, I should have this looseleaf copy available complete by the end of May... -Wayne

am interested in the B/W copy...but 70 extra seems steep...maybe if you get enough solid orders and find a smaller shop that will give you a bulk order discount then I am game... can't wait to see the new engine book MJ |

It's also a time thing too. It won't be worth my while if I don't charge the $99 or so. I have a feeling, for the people rebuilding their engines right now (and spending $4000+), it will be worth it. There are many, many hints and tips and mistakes to avoid in the manual. It's going to be similar quality and style to 101 Projects, but focusing only on the engine.
For those who haven't seen it yet, here's the outline: HOW TO REBUILD YOUR PORSCHE 911 ENGINE, 1966-1989 Outline Introduction Intro and background on the 911 motor, it's variations, and model years 1- When to rebuild? This section would cover the test and clues that reveal when it's time to consider rebuilding your motor. Review of mileage amounts, oil consumption, performance, and general wear guidelines for the various displacement motors 2- Engine Removal This would cover the removal process of the engine from the car. Covers preparation, removal for different years, and other decisions, such as whether to drop the transmission at the same time. 3- Teardown This section would cover the disassembly and sorting of the engine parts and pieces. Start with accessory removal and end with removing the rods from the crank. 4- Inspection and Machine Shop This would be a large section covering the crank, rods, heads, pistons, cylinders, cam towers, and case. Basically everything that you would send to the machine shop. Also would cover what happens at the machine shop (i.e. description and pics of align-bore, valve grinding, etc.) 5- Performance and Reliability Improvements / Upgrades This section would focus on where to improve your motor. For example, adding larger pistons, or using the later-style oil pump, or upgrading to the Carrera Chain Tensioners. Would also cover reliability factors, such as those problems associated with the 1975-77 2.7L motors. Also cover an overview of exotic stuff like Superchargers, and twin-plugging. Currently this chapter is about 30,000 words alone (enough for a book on it's own) 6- Assembly Starting with the attachment of the rods to the crank and ending with the reinstallation of the fuel injection, this section would cover all the issues associated with assembly. 7- Engine Reinstall and Break-in The reinstall process, and how to break in your new engine (i.e. making sure your rings seat well). Will also include a section on dyno testing. Appendix A - Specifications. Compiled for all the 911 years from the Porsche manuals and spec books. Can't find the spec book for your year car? All engine info will be here. Appendix B - Parts diagrams and parts numbers for all engines 1965-89 Sound good? It's about 75% complete! -Wayne

Let's see, for $99 I get a B&W loose leaf version for the shop AND the full color book when it comes out? The deal is too good to be true
Do I just email my credit card number privately or do it on the Catalog site? Thanks Wayne for all your hard work!

Wayne -- I'd like to have the new book, but for a 100 bucks..hmm. Please consider another option...make a CD!! I'd pay the same 30 bucks for a CD! I didn't read every reply, don't know if this has been suggested, but you can cut a lot of discs and do a lot better by making CDs! Consider the guy on Yahoo who keeps selling 911 manuals on CD for 20 bucks a pop! First, I can print off only what I need, and he spends only a buck or less to repro the CD.
My 2 cents
