Gearbox noise.

Got my 915. 83 SC gearbox back from the repairers last week after him repairing all the faults he had found.
2nd synchro had broken up and had done a lot of damage.
The repairer had asked me to sorce the parts for him to fit.
Shift Sleeve (new)
Synchro Hub (new)
1st to 5th Synchro's (new)
Input shaft bearing (new)
2nd gear gear set marked matched pair (used but perfect condition)
3rd gear gear set marked matched pair (used but perfect condition)
Gasket set (new)
Swepco oil (new).
Fitted back engine and box back into car, but before taking car out for a test drive i had her up on axle stands, started her up and put her through all the gears.
In all the gears there is a knocking noise and knocking noise increases as you go up through the box.
The repairer has over 30 years experience in this trade and came highly recomended, i phoned him to tell him the problem and he said everything was fine when he assembled it back and that all the parts i had supplied were correct. he's not being very helpfull now i,ve paid him.
Does anyone have any idears what the noise could be and point me in the right direction of what to check.
Many thanks. Dave.

Take it back to him and let him hear it ! Before doing that though, you should take it for a short drive to see if the noise happens while the car is under a load.

Have done as you guys suggested today, dropped the car down and ran her for a few hundred meters up and down the road, the knocking noise sounded bad and was concerned that i was causing more trouble, got her back up on axle stands and removed the the CV's and the knocking noise is still there with them removed, one thing i hadn't tried up till this afternoon is to run her in reverse gear but it is knocking in that gear aswell.

The source of the knocking is "where"? CVs?

Best,

Doyle

Check the coupler, adjust/reset it. Mine was set a little off after I installed the Gate Shift Kit. Reset and all is well. While driving I had a bit of knocking but when I moved the stick a bit it went away.

I agree as well.

Did you put the transmission back in the car yourself? You may have to trailer it and have him agree that it is inside the box then he ought to pull the engine and re-install for you.

He will not want to and he will have every excuse not to. You need to determine a game plan before picking up the phone.

is it knocking while its out of gear, or only when a gear is selected?
