My motorcycle has carbon fiber mufflers. They are 18 years old and look and sound great, plus they are very light.
Not sure why dasfischer equates his ass to CF, he must work out. |

He does not do aftermarket parts (unless your name is Porsche) but that entire thread is extremely valuable to see what a top level group can do to massage a 964 into something at the edge of the art. I have not spoken directly to him in some years. He is in NYC, and maybe Bill V. or others know him. I posted that so others (esp. those who are engineers restoring a 911) could see where the edge of the art is and maybe make something similar. If not, they those who profess in the engineering or science fields might possibly get their graduate students interested. The 911 can become lighter over the years... Please don't pester Mr. Linton -- I'm sure he is busy. |
Thanks to everyone for their posts about the CF muffler. It is very interesting to see the state of the art and what can be done with a car if you have the money. I being a professor will most likely continue running my rusty original muffler for as long as possible although I might try the ceramic coating mentioned previously. I am currently back in New Mexico and there will be no progress on the car for the next 6 weeks or so. My plan is still to finish (this means painted and running - with the original rusty muffler and heat exchanges and ratty seats) the car this fall and I have the following things on my to do list for the first month I am back in Florida:
1) Finish stripping fenders and fix rust around headlight buckets and dog legs and then epoxy primer 2) Strip and primer the rest of the body 3) Strip and repair damage to right rear bumper 4) Strip and repair damage to deck lid I am really considering taking the parts to get media blasted because using stripper and scrapping paint is a terrible undertaking! |
Kristoph,
That carbon fiber muffler would be ridiculous on the Rat. Its ridiculous on that late model car too, but I think that is the way our world has gone. Just because something can be done does not mean it should be. I suspect its all just about bragging rights anyway. Tremendous cost to save some weight. I'm a big fan of weight savings, but chances are the guy driving that car with the carbon fiber muffler is personally 40-60+ lbs overweight (I apologize in advance if you are not). A number of years back, I was standing next to a racer friend of mine (Ken) as he was purchasing a custom made titanium pedal cluster for his track car. This was just one in along list of very special pieces he had bought for the car. Now Ken had plenty of money and he was also rather portly. The guy across the counter, who also knew Ken very well got this exasperated look on his face and blurted out " Ken, you could take that weight off yourself a hell of a lot cheaper than you can take it out of the car, and it would have exactly the same effect". I was rolling on the floor with laughter! Your stock muffler will flow far more exhaust than your Zeniths and T heads can create. If you just want noise (sometimes a nice thing) I can show you how to cut the insides to duplicate the twin-pipe sport muffler. If you need a spare, I'm sure there are a couple old mufflers out in the shed someplace. As for coatings, I'm a big fan of sand blasting, followed with by good quality high temperature light grey paint. It looks correct and will last several years. Virtually all the corrosion affecting a muffler originates from the inside anyway. Very good to see you and Anna yesterday. If you have time before going back to Florida come by and do some welding (you can can put the new RF fender on the '61 for me!) and you can get some experience with the TIG and Lenco machines. But I warn you that you will then be very dissatisfied with a MIG. DG |
DG - You are completely mistaken and do not know the person or the group involved. He leads a group that makes racing parts for Porsche's racing teams. The pic I posted is of his personal project car he is building.

RWebb,
You are correct that I don't know your friend who makes racing parts for Porsche. I'm sure he is a nice guy, with an interesting job. If he has access to the materials, equipment, and technology to do this sort of thing, and he wants to undertake such for his own edification........I say bully for him! But I don't think I'm mistaken about this just a wee bit over the top for a '69 911T, or a 964 project. Or just about anything else with four wheels, short of something produced for that glitter-glam media charade which has replaced professional motorsports the past few decades. But I may have a jaundiced viewpoint. My favorite Porsche T-shirt was always the one that said "Sure, they made Porsches after 1965.....but who the hell cares" DG |
well now thats all out the way, looking forward to updates in a few weeks!;)

Yeah, I am glad that the muffler thing is all sorted out. I have spent the last several weeks bagging peaks, backpacking, and fishing in Colorado and New Mexico. It has been quite wonderful but I am starting to get the itch to start working on the Rat again. I will be returning to wonderful Bonita Springs around the 6th or 7th of August and expect that I will be posting progress shortly thereafter. The overall goal is to hopefully finish before the end of the year. Most of the major welding is done aside from some work on the fenders. Most of the fall will be spent scraping and grinding paint and putting the entire car in primer. There is a little body work left to do on the liscense plate piece as well as the right rear bumper and decklid. Once in primer I will have a local shop shoot the final paint!! During our recent camping trip my wife mentioned that we should do a roadtrip across America with the Rat once it is finished!!!!:D:D:D

I am back in BS;) (Bonita Springs!). It was great opening the garage door and seeing the "Rat" inside. I am planning on taking the fenders, rear bumpers and decklid for bead blasting later this week!

Welcome home! SmileWavy I've missed reading your posts this summer... I started my rebuild and finally began a thread this weekend. I dropped your name in it at the beginning. Hope you don't mind.

First progress report on the "Rat" for the fall: Today I ordered a dash cover (no idea how this is going to turn out but I can't afford a new dash for $1200). I figure that for $99 it is not going to be fantastic but I am hoping it will get the job done. I also ordered a new license plate panel and two boxes of the Thermocoustic Liner from Eastwood (10 sq feet) for sound deadening on the floors and other restored areas. I am going to try and save as much of the original sound deadening material as possible because I am told that is why the old cars have such a characteristic smell. I am also hoping to get the fenders, rear deck lid, and both rear bumpers to the media blaster today! Hopefully pictures of nice shiny metal will follow soon.

or pull the dash and recover it...
for the smell, just hang a packet of wet horsehair from the mirror |

Day 38: Panels back from bead blasting! Today I got the fenders, decklid, and rear bumpers back from the bead blaster. He used garnet and did a fantastic job. The problem is that he found a ton of bondo and some serious repairs of the fenders will be needed. The deck lid had a ton of dents in it but I think that I can takes care of these. I think I will take the fenders to the same body shop that took care of the doors and hood. I am currently storing all of the parts in one of the guest bedrooms to prevent flash rust from occuring out in the garage. My wife is a saint for putting up with this and made bavarian pretzels for dinner last night to boot :D
Here are some pictures showing the parts after blasting and their location in the guest room! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955121.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955138.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955155.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955171.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955186.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955202.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1344955222.jpg |
jeebus man, you put metal bumper parts on nice-looking wooden furniture? no padding or anything? your wife is beyond sainthood.
