Would you mind telling us how much it costs to get that amount of fasteners etc plated? Just for reference...

It was $148. This was a per batch price and I think I could have done an even larger amount. Looking at the cost of new hardware at $1.00 for quality M8 bolts I would say replating is the only way to go.

Day 63 Visiting the Rat at the painter: Today I got a call from the painter saying that he had another spray out card with the correct slate grey. He was able to find it after cross referencing with a PPG supplier. The color looks to be dead on and I will have to compare with the original color card from Wilhoit when it arrives. The Rat looks fantastic with everything being ultra smooth and even had P car company - a race car that wrecked at Sebring. The hood gap on the Rat looks quite a bit better than on the race car that has all fiberglass panels.

Day 63 Continued: Once I got home after visiting the paint shop I got ambitious and attacked a few things related to "tasks before re-assembly" which was exciting.

it's a good idea to check the spray card in different lighting situations - I looked at mine under shop Fl's, in direct sun and diffuse sun (at different times of day too)

Enjoy!

kkinzli 10-07-2012 05:02 PM

Thanks Randy, I will be sure to check under different lighting conditions.

Day 64: Today I was able to work on the seat attachment rails. For some reason these were horribly rusted. I ended up using stripper and then the wire wheel to clean them up. I am not happy with how clean they are and will need to pull out the blaster to finish them up this week. I also got the Wilhoit paint card in the mail and it looks awesome (Anybody that is going for slate gray need a paint card after I am done with it?;) It will be cheaper than Wilhoit!) I was also able to start cleaning up and painting the headliner bars. I was also able to head over to Peter's and use his vise to unscrew the latches! While over there we did a bit of welding and took apart the front suspension including ball joints and A arm bushings for the "Yellow Submarine" Pete's 914-6 in the making.

After grinding - I still need to blast some of the hard to get areas before painting

One headliner bar all cleaned up and ready for paint. I am making sure to keep these in order as I know each one of the four as a specific location

Glad you got the latches sorted, and have found a cup for one at least.

To answer your question regarding the seat attachments, on the early cars nearly all I've seen are rusted like yours, mine included. I think the ribs in the stamping allowed water to pool there, from getting in and out of the car IMO.

Sorting out the latches turned out to be fairly easy. Luckily, Obi Wan had a few extra ones lying around and is sending them to me so I can use the cups and springs. It is nice to have such a good Porsche Master as a teacher/supporter of the Rat project:):):):) Especially when the apprentice makes stupid mistakes and disregards his advice.

The theory about water pooling in the seat attachment rails when getting in and out of the car is a good one.

Day 65: Today I was able to finish the seat rails. I also was able to paint some cool 500gpm pumps and valves that the Bonita Springs Fire Department donated to FGCU. I am going to use them in my pump design lectures so the students can actually see one in person.

While working on the seat rails and pumps I received a package that contained an early birthday present from my parents!!

Ahh, Fluid Flow! I loved those types of classes! ...and a nice red to boot.

Tell me, is your early birthday present an owner's manual holder in the basket weave material? I can't say that I know exactly what that is...

Day 66: Today I got as call from the painter that said they were done blocking and needed me to disassemble the car! What a great phone call to get:D I went over on Friday afternoon after work and took off the hood, deck lid, fenders, rear bumpers and the doors. The car looks amazing and the shop has been really meticulous about the sanding and body work. I am quite pleased with their work

Here is a cool picture of a nice gift from Peter. When I was over at his house working on his front suspension for the "Yellow Submarine" he presented me with this awesome Porsche flag!!

I also recieved a set of latches from Obi Wan and was able to correct my mistake of sending the latches to the electroplater fully assembled. Thanks ObiSmileWavy

I got a happy surprise on Saturday when the new trunk carpet arrived! It is an early Christmas present from my parents. Vielen Dank liebe Eltern:)

Day 67: Today the painter got the piant to match the spray out card from Wilhoit! I went over to the shop in the afternoon and found the Rat already in the booth!:D The wet sanding job looks amazing. The body should be painted tomorrow with the removable panels getting painted on Monday.

Here are a few pictures of the painting setup the shop has. Justin, the painter, was kind enough to show me how everything was done and allowed me to take a ton of pictures.

Who would have thought that slate gray has yellow in it?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1350594546.jpg

Here is the Dupont code for making 4 oz of slate gray for a spray out card. The first column tells you the pigment type and the second column gives you a cumulative weight of the mixture in grams. The third column is the weight of each pigment in grams.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1350594574.jpg

The final paint match!! This was achieved by using a special camera to create the proper mixture to match the Wilhoit paint card. The only difference here is that the spray out card from the painter does not have clear on it and therefore looks a little matte and does not reflect the sunlight as much.

Hi!

My car is at the painter too and it will be slate grey too (that was the factory color). So we are really going head to head! :-) The complete painting here in Hungary will cost me around 3600 USD. Will yours be cheaper or expensiver?

Laszlo
