My car is at the painter too and it will be slate grey too (that was the factory color). So we are really going head to head! :-) The complete painting here in Hungary will cost me around 3600 USD. Will yours be cheaper or expensiver?

That is an awesome coincidence. Too bad we never got to drink a palinka this last summer. In terms of the final painting and sanding and buffing after the paint the work is costing me $1700. This is for 3 coats of color and 3 coats of clearcoat. I think the reason it is less is because I brought the car to the painter in primer and ready to sand.
Can't wait to see pictures of your car!

Cheers,
Kristoph

Kristoph,
If the Rat was being sprayed yesterday, why don"t we have pictures yet? C'mon, you're holding out on us!

Hi David! Friday was really hectic and I was not able to make it over to the paint shop. The painter did send some pictures to my phone and I just about to post them! Thanks for the advice on getting extra paint. The fenders will be painted off of the car and the rail along the trunk was painted on Friday with the body. Hopefully, I will be assembling later this week!

kkinzli 10-21-2012 06:22 PM

Day 68: Today I got a ton of pictures from the painter while he was painting the body, and the insides of the rear deck lid and hood. The pictures were taken with a phone so they are not great but will do for now. I will post more pics once I go to put the fenders on the car for the final buffing on Monday. I have yet to see the car but the painter texted me that it was flawless and that their was not even one imperfection in the paint. I guess all of the block sanding and prep payed off!

Thanks! I can't wait for reassembly. The shop will have the panels painted by Wednesday and then I will put the body back together so they can buff everything. Then the Rat comes home to be put back together!

dafischer 10-22-2012 09:22 AM

Kristoph, that is absolutely beautiful. Have fun with re-assembly!

You have got to be so pumped right now. That looks great! I love the color!

kkinzli 10-22-2012 10:05 AM

Thanks guys! These pictures are just out of the paint booth with no buffing. The painter Justin told me this morning that the car will look ten times better after the buffing. I find that hard to believe because I think it is already perfect;)

Wow, congrats- it must feel really good to have come this far in 2 months and change.

Wow!

Hi there from the UK!

Only just stumbled across this thread after Googling for "911 floorpan welding tips"

I've been restoring my '66 912 since July 2011, and am currently painting the interior
Like yourself, I've hand prepped nearly everything, and let me tell you, when you said you couldn't wait to finish the floorpans, I know EXACTLY how you feel!

I won't hijack your thread, I've yet to find the time to start my own, as most evenings/weekends are spent down the workshop

I'd just like to say, bloody good effort! Reading through your thread, it's like a mirror image of my time so far with my car

I've got a driver side floorpan arriving from Max at Revival to start prepping for welding this weekend, and the rest of the interior to paint

It's been a long journey so far, but as mentioned in previous posts by yourself, I'm learning new skills all the time

I'm lucky in that I come from a mechanical engineering background, and so wish that more design/manufacturing went on the uk, to equip the next generation which I feel are basic tool skills

Keep up the fantastic work!

TwTony

Thanks! It certainly feels a lot longer than 2 months since I got home. Working as a professor and then spending every spare second on the Rat has been quite exhausting. I can't wait for the fun assembly part to begin!

Thanks John! Hopefully I will head up to Tampa one of these days and see Jeremy's version of your octisserie.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the encouragement. I am so glad to know that the thread is being used as an educational tool as that is one of the main reasons I am posting everything in detail. I would love to see pictures of your project. Please post a link here once you get your thread rolling! I agree that having an engineering background makes you lucky! That might be why I chose to devote my life to teaching engineering;) All the best in your project and feel free to PM me with any questions.

Cheers,
Kristoph
