Funny... My brother just bought a '74 911 last weekend with a Perma Tune that has no spark. We spent a bunch of time today diagnosing with no luck so far... Talked with a friend who said the Bosch units were kind of finicky... I don't recall, what are you running right now? MSD?

Kristoph,
That tachometer link that Webb provided is quite interesting. I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that there was a different tach for the '69T than for the other models that had CD boxes. So your tach may be just fine as is. If you wind up getting that entire electrical panel you showed me, I think it has an RPM transducer (the big silver box next to the window heater relay?). If you look carefully at the wiring diagram for a '70 car, it should guide you how to install this all correctly.

Thanks for the "inspiration" link. As a matter of fact I did work on the roadster yesterday and plan to do so again today.

Thanks Randy! That will be most helpful in setting up my CDI

Hi Jeremy! I am not running anything right now. What I have is just a coil and points so my spark is rather weak. I drove a 2.2 with a CDI a few weeks ago and it felt like there was quite a difference so I figured what the hell and bought a CD box, coil, and an entire electrical panel from a 71.

David,

I will hopefully get around to installing the CD box sometime in the next two weeks. Glad to hear that you got to work on the roadster! Looks like I will be doing a clutch on the Rat in the near future as 5th gear has started to slip under hard acceleration :D I added the smiley as I think it will be fun to drop the engine and replace the clutch. It will also give me a chance to clean up and repaint the engine bay and refinish the heat exchangers and muffler!! Yesterday I drove the Rat to watch FGCU beat San Diego State and on the way home my wipers stayed on and I could not turn them off (I did eventually by removing the #4 fuse ) Looks like I need a new switch in the stalk. Any tips on doing this or is it going to be as easy as I hope? Glad you got some time to work on the roadster:)

Yesterday was good practice for when I get mine going... I helped my diagnosis his no-spark condition... Turns out the CDI was fine... Points were corroded. Car now has spark.

Kristoph,
Good luck with the CD install. It will make a big difference.

For your wipers, it's not the switch. There are contacts in the wiper motor/gearbox which control the stopping. They probably just need a good cleaning and greasing. A common thing on these old wiper mechanisms.

Congrats to FGCU. They made it a lot farther than the lobos!

Thanks David!

Looks like the Mountain West teams really sucked it up. I really hope that FGCU beats Florida on Friday. That would be quite the upset. Thanks for the advice on the wiper motor. I will try to tear into that in two weekends as Anna and I are going to the Keys with her folks this Friday. Any guess as to how much life I have left on my clutch once 5th gear starts slipping?

Great! I hope my CD install goes as smoothly. I know that my points are good but have had issues with the ignition breaking up around 4500 rpm. Hopefully the CD box will solve this as I am sure it is related to the condensor.

Daves911L 03-25-2013 10:52 AM

Kristoph,
It just occurred to me that maybe you are getting point float. There are some crappy aftermarket points around which will physically fit but don't have the spring tension to close at higher RPM. Some of the more recent Bosch product also seems a little suspect. Something to keep in mind, as a problem of that nature will persist even with your new CDI.

As for the clutch, that depend mostly on your right foot and hills (I think that is not much of a problem in Florida). Even so I doubt you will be able to coax more than a few hundred miles out of it, and it's very hard on your flywheel.

Thanks David! I think I still have an older set of Bosch points in there. I think you put them in there for the trip down to FL back in 2010. Looks like the Rat is going to get another extended break as it will take me a while to do all of this. I don't think risking damage to the flywheel is a good idea at this point so last night was the last 911 action I will get for a while :( I am planning on buying a clutch kit from our host that includes the throwout bearing, pressure plate, clutch disk, and alignment tool. In addition I am going to get new flywheel bolts and a new flywheel seal. I think I am going to need a 12mm star tool to get the flywheel bolts off and a bar that holds the flywheel in place so I can tighten up the bolts. I might just make this out of a piece of flat steel instead of buying one. I am hoping that the flywheel can be machined. Is there anything else I am going to need to replace the clutch? Any tricks to the engine drop?

I am planning on cleaning up and painting the engine bay and will blast and paint the heat exchangers and muffler. I will also give the engine a good scrubbing while it is out. Is there anything else I should address in terms of oil leaks?

I just saw this posted. It is a really cool web app to build your dream 911.

BusSelecta.com | Porsche Selecta

Here is my version of the perfect 911 ;) I wasn't sure where to put the racing stickers so I kind of went crazy. I have been wearing the number 13 on soccer jerseys since I was a little kid and it has always brought me luck :)

Too bad FGCU lost. I have a feeling that before March Madness I was the only person on Pelican who knew it even existed ;) For those of you that don't remember I am a professor of civil engineering there ;)

kkinzli 04-10-2013 05:14 AM

I put in my order for clutch replacement parts yesterday. I made sure to get the flywheel seal, new flywheel bolts, the clutch alignment tool, the correct sockets for the CVs and the flywheel bolts and the flywheel lock. I also got 4 CV boots as mine are torn and need to be replaced. I also got a shift shaft seal for the transmission as mine is leaking and needs to be replaced.

Are there any oil leak areas I should address while I have the engine out? I was thinking of checking the engine oil cooler, the pressure sender and the breather attachement when I have the engine out. Are there any other oil leaks to address while I have the engine out?

Fskof 04-23-2013 08:31 PM

Are those Fuchs 14" or 15" and what size tires do you have?

Thanks
Frank

kkinzli 04-24-2013 02:13 PM

The fuchs I have are 15". I am not sure on the tire size. I will check when I get home.

There are others, but where is oil leaking on the engine?

If the answer is "not sure" - then clean the engine in situ (while avoiding sending toxic waste into your karst study areas or kids drinking water...) and run the car a while to find out.

I wouldn't worry about being too proactive if there are no leaks in certain spots.

Good time to set the valves, so use a good gasket there.

I have Kumho Ecsta ASX tires in size 205/55R15. I have been really happy with them.
