Thumbs down Haynes manuals, MY *SS

Hi gang. So, I already have a Bentleys manual to assist me with my 84 but I thought what the hell lets get a Haynes manual as well. I mean I've always been the sort that says more info can't hurt. Well it arrived today and I was wrong, what a piece of S#@T! Anyways it will make a good door stop.

haha, I can only imagine given the Haynes one I have for my Saab 900. There is a Bentley for the Saab 900 too and it is just as good as the 911 SC one I have.

Welcome to the forum, post up a pic of your car!

You should really get the Clymer manual too, so you have a full set...

It does have uses .. I have previously posted that I use mine for a pad when lifting the rear end of my SC it is thicker than a newspaper and soaks oil very well .. just center on your floor jack and center on the sump plate .....

It works very well ....

Find the pages with the least amount of ink on them and use for TP when you run out in the shop!

I was kinda thinking the same...but ink or not, that paper in those Haynes manuals is a little too harsh for me. The old saying "rougher than a cob" comes to mind. ( All you old farm boys will get that one )

But seriously...how is it that Haynes and Clymer are still around ? Is it just the 911 manuals that are so worthless ? Are their Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic manuals actually very, very good ?? Or are the Honda and Toyota manuals the same lousy quality and they just happen to sell enough to folks who want to know how to change their own oil??

I have a Haynes for my Tacoma and it is fine. There are a couple problems, but as long as you are remotely mechanically inclined, you can figure them out. I just used it for a clutch change this past weekend.

Biggest issue I have with the 911 manual is the way it jumps around .. the started with the first issue then they added "updates" and to follow it you have to jump from one end to the other plus its just poorly written ...

I agree with the others being good ... I have almost 20 of the other books and they seem pretty good .. in fact I have the C4 Corvette book and its really good .. Guess the 911 book must have been edited or written by an idiot ......

It does work well for a jack pad though .....

Hayne's sucked back in the 70's and swallow now....Bentley has it's issues as well. Give them a call and ask a question.....send them an email on the stoopid typos.....they are all idiots.

I liked the manual especially with the pictures up side down, 20 years later never changed.

Back in 1972, I discovered a bad knocking rattle sound coming from the engine of my '68 911. The engine HAD to be attended to! Having never done anything more than changing plugs and oil changes on a 911, I had to tackle the job myself. (I was young, dumb and poor!). Thank goodness for Clymer and Haynes manuals, as they were the only game in town. I couldn't afford the factory manuals. Long story short, I completely rebuilt the motor with guidance of those manuals, as marginal as they were. By the way, the knocking sound was a piston pin which had snapped in half and was allowing the piston/rod to wobble. Bored out the case and put a larger set of 88mm jugs in, making a short stroke 2.5 ltr motor. It was a great educational experience that set me on the road to owning five more 911s over the years, but it all began with Clymer and Haynes! When the Bentley appeared on the scene, I immediatly ordered one. I almost had an orgasm the first time I paged through it, it was like Christmas had arrived!

I first got the Haynes for the 82 911sc because I have always had success with my other one for my jeep. As soon as I got it and was looking through it, I was like what the crap is this garbage. I could tell right way that I was going to hate it, so I ordered the Bentley and couldn't have been happier.

I disagree...

I firmly believe you need to find and purchase (at a good cost) every manual you can find on your car. They can be a hoot (what were they thinking? ) and they can be priceless (rebuilding a Norton gearbox and the one pic I needed was in the Clymers manual!).

When working on a car, etc., it really can help to have every possible angle/take on the procedures. I regularly spleunk bookstores for car and motorcycle manuals, sometimes taking home a good deal for a car I do not (yet) own. I owned a superb '74 TR-6 but it was the "color" Car and Driver folios that tweaked me on the Porsche. A year after purchasing that manual I was pursuing the abandoned Targa sitting in the underground garage at work.

Here are a few links:

Having found the Bentley electrical sections permeated with errors, and omissions, I bought the factory supplement.

Also available for other 3.2 years:

And here is the link for other 911 manuals:

Good luck,

Just because I am a man of my word .. I happened to have TIMCHAR over today to do a valve adjust, oil change and tranny fluid swap and we needed to jack the back ... he didn't have a jack pad and I have rocker covers and can use one so we used my method .. Tim saw the sump marks on the cover proving the earlier usage .. and guess what it works on the 3.2 l engine also .....
