I installed a single in single out CHL muffler on my 88. The exhaust pipe from the muffler rests on the mount for the bumper shock. It rattles like crazy. Any help. I can't adjust it. Defective?
The pipe is perfectly aligned with the space between the fender and the bumper. Dead center. Any suggestions? ------------------ David 1988 911 Carrera Coupe Leonoff Net [This message has been edited by Periokid (edited 07-29-2001).] |

The quality of the GHL mufflers have been excellent. They use precision jigs to align them, and we haven't heard of any not fitting. Of course, everyone makes mistakes, but is there something non-stock about your car or engine? What type of heat-exchangers are you using? If it's a 1974 muffler (which I suppose that it has to be), I'm not sure if it's designed to fit in the 1988 bumper wells...

The car is using the stock exhaust. The only change is the muffler.

i installed a pair of GHL exchangers on a 930 recently and had a severe alignment problem. the RUF muffler, which bolts directly to the turbo, was 2" lower on the right side. the flange the turbo bolted to was obviously clocked in wrong on their jig. a call to GHL produced the usual "nothing wrong with our jig" response. they were also going to send the customer a new piece, but that never came. the muffler fit fine on the OEM pipe. the bolt holes in the turbo and the flange had to be drilled oversize to allow rotation of the turbo for some improvement, the final alignment was achieved by pie cutting the muffler pipe just beyond the turbo, bending it up and rewelding it. what a hassle. i won't be buying GHL turbo exhaust until they fix the jig.

Mmmm.....Interesting comments by JW.
My recently installed GHL fit like a glove. The only thing I didn't like about it, were the very cheesy mounting straps and fasteners. I made my own, rather than carp about it to GHL. What's sort of distressing is GHL's attitude as detailed by John. If John is right, they need to pay more attention to customer satisfaction, after the sale. ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website |

I just had to reply to this thread
I purchased a full GHL header/ muffler combo, and within two weeks the muffler started to Resonate ( sounded like loose bolts were in the bottom of the muffler) . The muffler had cracked , GHL replaced it + paid for the labor to install it. The muffler still does not sound correct, especially at lower RPM's (has a buzzing sound). Some friends of mine have 911's with aftermarket mufflers with much better sound. Does anyone have a GHL muffler with the same problem? I am going to call GHL agian, does anyone know if this normal. Mark,
This sounds like a common problem attributed to B&B, not GHL. I have had my single-in/single-out muffler installed for about 2k miles now, with no problems of any sort. The sound is very pleasing in tone and volume. There is absolutely *no* resonance at any engine speed. If I were you, I'd stir up some $hit with GHL. Get a return authorization, and ship that sucker back with a letter detailing the faults. FWIW, GHL claims to have a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser. Make them stick to it. ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website |

I put a GHL single in/dual 3" out on my 87'. The fit was excellent, the straps were cheesy, and ill fitting. I bought some new allen bolts, and spacers to get the proper fit. On a positive note, the muffler did come with a gasket.
As for sound; I don't have what you would call "buzzing-resonation", but I do have a really loud droning around 2k-3,500k rpm. It's most noticeable while driving uphill at 50-60mph in 5th gear. I'm not sure if this is inherent with the muffler, or a defect. It does go away upon acceleration, or rpms about 4k. Anyone else car to comment? I ended going with GHL instead of Fabspeed as a result of Joe's poor reputation on Rennlist, adjustability of the tips, and cost (although they are quite close). -Dan ------------------ Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe http://www.cheaterswayside.com/911/gallery.asp?sort=0&userid=294 |

Most of the dissatisfaction with J. Fabiani has been because of the nature of his operation, a small one man shop. I put one of his mufflers on my Carrera rather than another B&B and have been very pleased with the fit(custom), finish(especially the tips), and sound. I put 500 mi on the car in the last 5 days, top off 100% with no fatigue from noise(a one way trip to the Glen under the same conditions(120mi) with the B&B's would have my ears ringing for 2 days).
I found GHL to be very difficult to communicate with, they were not forthcoming as to the materials, design or construction of their products. ------------------ Bill Verburg My Home Page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery Page |

Wayne:
Why do you think that this has to be a 1974 muffler, since it's single in/out? I only ask because I'm getting close to looking for a muffler for my '84 Carrera.

Duh, brain fart at 12:47AM? Not sure why I wrote that - wasn't thinking.
We've had some compaints about GHL fit, but they have been very good at reworking and replacing stuff that doesn't fit. As for communicating with them, this is the first I've ever heard of any complaints at all... -Wayne

I have built a couple mufflers for 930s. It would be very hard to make a one piece muffler fit nicely due to the slight differences in the cars.
I think the resonance is caused by using thin SS for the muffler can. People want a light SS muffler that doesn't resonate. I don't think it can be done. You have to use thicker stock.
