What does this caliper belong to??? Need to buy a rebuild kit for it.

Here are some pics. It is leaking from the piston. I believe it may be a 914 brake caliper. It is on my 550 Spyder as a rear caliper and this one has been slowly leaking for a while so time to fix when the car is apart. The markings that I have found are the following...

- F...a, fitta or filta or fatta... not sure what that says.
- 11
- 26

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers, Bryan

Pics to follow in next post... a couple minutes.

pics as promised

As previously mentioned, I am guessing this is a 914 caliper... could be way off for all I know. This is why I come to the experts.

Thx,
Bryan

FWIW...I'm no expert, but here is a sample of early 914 rear calipers (had them refinished by Eric Shea). Your calipers seem different. There is a rare(?) caliper from a 914/6 that's supposed to be different.:

Here's a link to Eric's site showing a pic of the 914/6 calipers. They look very similar to yours:

Yep, 914 caliper with a spacer to accommodate vented rotors. Eric has a how-to page for rebuilding them, and he can also supply you with a rebuild kit. Though for $300, it's probably worth it to have him do them for you, IMO.

What you have is definitely a late 914/4 rear caliper; two bleed nipples and hex head bolts are the primary clues. The logo is "Ate" for Alfred Teves. The numbers are just mold marks. These are tricky to rebuild, so a PMB restoration is probably the best option by far.

Hi Bryan,

This seems a curious rear caliper choice for the 550, I assume it is a reproduction??

Are you tracking the car, if so, what are you running for the front calipers??

Do you have a prop valve??

You might be able to improve your braking performance by installing a 914-6 or ferrari 308 caliper, which has a 2 mm bigger piston and a spacer, allowing you to run vented discs.

You could tune the final F/R balance with one of Tilton's fine adj prop valves.

Sorry, a couple of beers and istart to run off at the mouth about improving braking, but if you are interested...

BTW, Very Pretty Car, I love the color.

Chris, thanks for the beer motivated info. I have been told that these are in fact 914-6 rear calipers. I have taken them off and will send tomorrow to Eric in Salt Lake City for a rebuild. Everyone on 914 World says they are the real 914-6 caliper so I am assuming that is the case.

I do not track the car and the front brakes are custom CNC brake calipers made down in southern CA.

I do have two brake master cylinders up front and two fluid holders so they are separate from each other. Behind the brake pedal I can adjust how hard each one is coming on which in theory would be my prop valve correct?

I couldn't find any pics of the front brakes... I will take one if needed but they are 4 piston calipers I think. Let me know if you have any other input and thanks for the compliments on the car.

Here is a pic of the power plant.

Regards,
Bryan

I have had enough 914/6 rear caliper pairs (3) and 914/4 rear caliper pairs (20+) to say they are 914/4, and Eric will say the same. Here are some real 914/6 calipers:

Note the rounded hump instead of the rib on the back, note the single bleeder nipple, note the nuts on the bolts. Note how much wider the calipers are; almost square.

A better view of the "hump" on the backs of these 914/6 GT rear calipers.

I agree - 4's. I have both 4's and 6's sitting in my office and the ones from your 550 replica are 4's. Easy to mix up. When you talked about them on World, you never showed pics, only asked about value. Eric will confirm.

Good point on me not showing pics on 914 world... forgot I didn't. I think i assumed at that point they were. I will take some better pics as well but that makes this a much easier issue then. The base model calipers which I have are readily available correct? If so, can they bought new or should I still just get mine rebuilt? May make sense to just swap these out as a core for some new ones and get them back on the car.

I don't need much stopping power... the car only weighs approx 1,400 lbs.

Thanks for all the help. I will also post a pic on 914 world to clear up any confusion.

Regards,
Bryan

Def. 914-4 calipers. Don't split them.

Talk to Eric at PMB. He usually keeps the 4's in stock and sends out priority from UT. He charges a core charge so you can cross in the mail. I have seen NOS calipers and Eric's are better. They are hand assembled by him (not a no name company) and look and work perfectly. Good luck, Mark

Thanks, I have talked to him a few times already via email. I am sending to him tomorrow as long as price is right. He comes very highly recommended from all over the forum world.

What would the value of these be as a core?
