Hey Warren 72 paint codes

My paint tag in the door frame is in bad shape and I don't have it in front of me but I thought I remembered reading 999 9 and coudn't tell if there was another digit... it might have been so light I coudn't read it. My E was 060 as a 72 so I assume it was built in late 71 ( yes/no).

The question comes as I think the bottom layer of paint was some shade of brown, maybe sepia brown.

I'm heading out to the parking lot to check it out and see if there is a discenable fifth digit.

Be right back.

Porsche Crest

Dennis,

The '999' cars can be any color at all, as it meant 'optional color to match paint sample!' A catch-all code when cars were special ordered. Hopefully, there is an untouched original spot ... somewhere in the passenger compartment, say, underside of the dash, or behind ashtray ...

Thanks Warren,

So that means the brown is some other "off" colour. I'll see if I can find some nice unfaded chips.

Thanks Again,

Any numbers on how many cars were like this?

My 86 has the "999" paint code on the options sticker near the front of the hood. The paint code sticker reads Iris Blue, a standard color I believe.

My hood sticker should be long gone, Actually I think I have a different hood so that would be no help to me.

It would be interesting if there were "factory" colors used with this 999 special order code.

Could that have been used anytime a customer simply ordered a car of a specific color? ( including the custom colors)

Another Porsche mystery!
