Porsche Crest '69 911E engine number look up help

Could someone look up this engine number for me?

6290134

It is from a '69 911E. I am looking at purchasing a 912 hot rod with this engine and a 901 gearbox swapped in, and I just wanted to get a little bit of the engine history. The seller said that the po did the swap sometime in the 80's, and I just wanted to see if I could get a little bit more info on the engine.

Came out of 69 Targa (901/09), 140hp and originally had mechanical injection.

The seller said it was a 2.0, but I thought that 911e's were 2.2's. Do you know which it is?

2.2s started in 1971. The 901 series were 2.0.....but that doesn't mean that someone didn't use bigger pistons in a later rebuild....

It would have been a 2.0 the 2.2 came about for the 70-71 MY. A lot of the added value for this engine resides I'm whether or not it still has the MFI on it.
Either way it'll be peppier than the old 4-banger.

Good luck.

Engine 6290134 decodes as:
6 = Engine designation, 6-cylinder unit.
2 = Engine type 911E, type 901/09.
9 = Model year 1969.
0134 = Sequential number.

This is a type 901/09 1969 911E ‘2.0’ (66 x 80 mm = 1991 cc), Mechanical Fuel Injection (MFI), a 215 mm push-type clutch (and manual transmission) and magnesium crankcase.
It has Biral cylinders with cast aluminum pistons (CR = 9.1:1).
Performance was 140 hp @ 6500 rpm.

The 901/09 engine numbers range from 6290001 to 6292270.
Yours is #134 out of a total of 2270 built between (roughly) September 1968 and June 1969.

There is another (smaller) series of 1969 911E type 901/11 engines built for Sportomatic transmissions.
The 901/11 engine numbers range from 6298001 to 6298583.

The 1970 and 1971 911E were ‘2.2’ (66 x 84 mm = 2195 cc).
Numbers for these engines are:
1970 911/01: 6200001 – 6202476 (manual).
1970 911/04: 6208001 – 6208434 (Sportomatic).
1971 911/01: 6210001 – 6211767 (manual).
1971 911/04: 6218001 – 6218260 (Sportomatic).

Aside from the larger bore, the 2.2 differs from the 2.0 by having considerably stronger (and heavier) connecting rods and (very important) the later, lower volume cylinder heads.
While the CR was retained at 9.1:1, the performance rating was increased to a very conservative 155 hp @ 6200 rpm.

The 1972 and 1973 engines were ‘2.4’ (70.4 x 84 mm = 2341 cc). Exception the ‘73RS ‘2.7’.
The 1974 through 1977 engines were ‘2.7’ (70.4 x 90 mm = 2687 cc). Exception the Carrera ‘3.0’.

During the years ’69-‘73, the significant differences among the 911T, E and S were camshaft profile, intake diameter, compression ratio (CR) and rpm for peak power.

Best,
Grady

Wow. Thanks for all the valuable info. Sadly, the engine is carburated, and no longer has mfi.

Btw, I'm a newbie, so I appreciate the little lesson on decoding engine numbers and the size of engines throughout the years.
