Rennshift + Ed's Coupler = WOW!

I had previously installed the Rennshift with Rosewood ball a week or so back, as I found the stock shifter to be rather terrible. The Rennshift made a huge difference in shift quality by itself. Today I added in the Coupler Whisperer's (Ed) coupler. And WOW...what another huge difference! A huge plus in the install was the previous owner had drilled a small hole in the shift rod and tapered the set screw...so there was no adjustment required. Just lined up the coupler with the hole and the set screw aligned allowed the couple to align itself! Beautiful!

I think this is a close to "buttery" shifts as one can get in a 911. Certainly not a cheap fix, but IMO well worth the money. I would say the car now shifts as smoothly and positively as a modern tranny. The difference is almost hard to believe.

Thanks for the great coupler, Ed!!

Hey Hydrocket

There's a conical bolt on the trans side of the shift coupler that fits into the hole in the trans shifting shaft. Are you saying that the PO drilled the splined shaft on the shifter side of the coupling?

I installed Ed's coupler last week. It has had an amazing effect. Can anyone comment on the Rennshift vs Wevo shifter?

yes, I'd like to know as well. I'm about to buy a Wevo, and had one in my race car. I didn't think the Wevo was that great.

You mean the Rennshift wasn't that great?

No, I typed it correctly. I did not think the Wevo was that great. The stock shifter in my resto project is trashed. I have to buy something, so the Wevo was still the obvious choice. I have no experience with the Rennshift. I'd like to hear from somebody who has dealt with both.

I put a Rennshift with 2 inch extension and tall momo anatomic shift knob. It's perfect!

i believe the wevo kit uses your stock shifter housing and the jwest rennshift is a complete unit ready to bolt in ..that's what sold me ...it's a well made and quality unit and i was satisfied with my purchase.I,m running the wevo coupler right now but just ordered Ed's bushing's for my stock coupler just to see how it works out.I figured for 35 bucks i'll check it out and post my results on the comparison

Tom, I was told that in the 72' ONLY this causes an issue because there is no "gate" on the 5-R plane...I cannot say on the 71 if you have the same thing. the bushings should fit without an issue...if you want to try a set i would be more than happy to offer you a money back since I cannot say for sure.

you can email me offline at my user ID @msn.com

Ok i've been running the jwest shifter, wevo coupler and kendall lsd gear oil for two years now and it made a huge difference in the way my 915 shifted but the shift from 1st to 2nd was more times than not a little stiff...i bought a set of Ed's coupler bushings and rebuilt my coupler then installed and adjusted and took the car out for 4 different drives and the 915 is shifting better than it ever has,no more stiff 1st to 2nd and each gear change feels more positive like i'm driving a good shifting modern car....Thanks Ed !!

The RennShift will work with all 901s, the "911" (late 901), the weird '72 915 setup, and all the rest of the 915s.

Because it is a complete unit, it does not matter what you are starting with on the shifter side.

As found by Hydrocket, it is important to make sure the linkage is without slop to get the full effectiveness of the RennShift. No sense having a precision shifter if it is not well connected to the transmission!

I have a Rennshift + Stomski coupler. It is a huge improvement over stock. I highly recommend getting the extended lever too. Places the shift knob closer to the steering wheel for less reach. BTW, if I had known about Ed's coupler when I bought my Rennshift, I would have gone that route.

I have the same setup in my 72, but went with the shorter shift rod from jwest, didn't like the long one-anyone want to buy it, it's brushed. You should probably install the boot so no crap gets down in there.
