Advice please: odometer stopped working...

The odometer on my 1987 targa suddenly stopped working this morning. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the problem would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to take a stab at fixing it myself, if it's not too difficult, before taking it in for repair.

Have you done any work prior to this?

It could be several things:

1. connection at the trans sensor
2. connection under carpet on top of tunnel
3. loose connection behind the gauge.

4. broken solder joint in the speedo, it would be the green wire.

Where in SoCal are you?

Jim

Thanks much. I'll check into those possibilities. I'm in San Diego county.

If the speedo is working and the odo isn't, it is likely the nylon gear in the speedo arfuerst said. As was said earlier, It is about $100 for North Hollywood to change out the gear and this is what I opted for. You can DIY but you have to be very careful taking the bezel off. Apparently zeroing up the trip meter while driving is not a good idea. Cheers

NH Speedo will completely service it for the price and repaint the dial so it looks new, calibration as well.

>>>100 bucks from Hollywood Speedometer.

And once you get it back, never press the reset button again! IMHO, this is the only way to keep from breaking the gears. Car moving or stopped, it doesn't matter -- this gear is WAY too weak to function correctly.

Mine just stopped working yesterday. I had not reset the trip odometer in quite sometime, and it rolled over at 999->1000. I guess that is just as bad as resetting while in motion and killed it.

I've actually reset mine a few times while in motion (force of habit from other cars I own) and never had any problems. It never once felt like something was going to break.

I have reset mine exactly once in the last 10K miles - it is at 251K and as far as I can tell it has never been replaced.

North Hollywood did mine including removing, reinstalling speedo while I waited. Took them 30 minutes including calibrating. My understanding is that the grease used originally breaks down the gear plastic after awhile.

North Hollywood repaired my odometer, changed the faceplate from 150MPH to 160MPH/KPH, and calibrated it for about $130.-. It took them about 3 days. Well worth the price.
