Window Regulator Questions

My driver's side window became hard to roll up and would make clicking noises after it got about half way up. I checked the bolt thing that holds the spring (Yes, that is the technical term) as from what I hear that is the problem quite often. It seemed fine. It appears as if the top half of the gear teath have been worn down, and the gears were skipping. I've looked at buying a new one here at Pelican Parts, but I have the parallel style regulator, and I can't find any replacements anywhere other than the newer style regulators. Pelican Parts also has the "Upgrade Kit" for my parallel style regulator, but what needs to be done? Is there a lot of drilling to be done. It says to refer to Tech. bulletin #7, where is that? I don't think that my old one is salvageable, if it is, what needs to be done and how much will it cost? The new one plus upgrade kit from pelican adds up to about $200, is this my only option? Any insight would be very helpful. Thanks.

I'm going through this exact same process this weekend. The bolt holding the spring broke on mine. I finally got all of the parts I need thanks to the helpful guys at Pelican. I'm going to take pictures throughout the process too, so I can put them on my web page I'm making for the car.

I have a copy of the bulletin I can email you tonight after I get home from work. There are a couple of holes to drill for the new regulator, and the bulletin shows where they need to go.

Stoddard rebuilds and sells window regulators. I would give them a call...

Hey fellas,
Bill, long time no talk! Anyway, I have the "clicking" too and rather than take the advice of others and fix it I just use my hand to help it up the last 4 inches. What bulletin are you guys talking about? I have 101 projects but didn't look to see if regulator is in there. Is there a way to lube up the regulator w/out removing it? What spring are you guys talking about?

Hi Joe. There's a coil spring on the back side. What happened with mine is that the bolt the spring is wrapped around broke. This allowed the two arm pieces to slip apart and the teeth on main arm began to slip on the gear. That caused my clicking sound.

After about two weeks (the window doesn't get used much), the arm slipped off and fell out of position. At that point, the window would pretty much freefall down in the door. Of course, this only happened during our rainy season..hehe.

Here's a link to my old post when I first started on this.

It's got a pic of my old and new regulator.

There's a tech bulletin that tells how to install the new type. Of course, I didn't have the bulletin. The great guys at Pelican emailed me a copy which I will gladly share.

I got the rest of the parts I need, so this weekend I'll be putting it all together.

I guess I'll be buying the new regulator. If anyone could send me that bulletin, that'd be great, thanks.

Well, I couldn't find all of your email addresses, so I put the bulletin on my web server. Here's the link to it.

Tech Bulletin 7

Good luck. I hope all turns out well.

I am in the same boat with my '69 ... on both sides.
I have taken a different route for the fix.... I made 2 new bolt parts out of stainless steel .. put them in and held them with a lock-tighted bolt to complete the job.
Seems to work nicely.
