1979 911 SC A/C Lines question
Hey everyone. After making sure there were no leaks in my a/c system, and charging my a/c system, we discovered we actually did have a leak! It was on the hose pretty much directly in front of the rear right wheel. That line goes right up into my upper right side of the condenser it looks like?. But I have no idea where from there. i cannot see it in front. I think it may go to my drier.? Right? So it's a steel braided thick line. That must be high pressure side?? I drove all over Denver today looking for someone who could help me fix it but to no avail. I am thinking then is my only option to replace the entire line? or can I just buy some A/C hose from Napa and buy new fittings to fit?

Is this the line from the front condenser to the evaporator? Either way, call Maxair they can make the hose you need. Napa does not carry the fittings you need if you're talking about Havana machine.

Assuming "right" is when you sit in the car, the ac hose in the RH rear wheel well would be the evaporator to compressor line:
Porsche, 911, air conditioning, barrier hoses |

OK, so that makes sense. Thanks guys. Is there anything special I need to know? like that my compressor is a seiko seiki and not york or will the fittings be the same.? ANd secondly, anybody have experience in removiong this line> The back part seems quite easy, it's the front that I am perplexed with so far

Briefly...
With no refrigerant in the system, remove the suction side hose (larger of 2) at the compressor. Verify if you have a flare or o-ring type fitting. Order the appropriate type hose with fittings (flare ends, oring ends or mixture). Car on ground, look between front tires. Remove cross member splash pan as follows; Remove 2 allen head bolts holding sway bar strap. Remove 2 hex head nuts. Remove splash pan. Reinsert allen heads in strap and snug up. Loosen lug nuts on RH rear tire. Jack up car, properly support with jack stands. Grab a 8 mm socket head driver. Remove all hose clamps (place clamps, screws and rubber washers in bucket); sometimes there is a hex bolt with nut holding a clamp under passg side foot floor board. Use 2 wrenches to loosen hose fitting nut at evaporator; determine is flare or o-ring. Before you remove hose note the routing under the, especially near steering rack and RH rear section (take pictures). Pull hose down from under near car by evaporator. Ditto at back rear wheel (here the hose goes up along the heater box and into a slot in the RH forward section of engine compartment (note the hose routing in the engine compartment near the oil lines). Clean fitting where hose mated at evaporator, ditto compressor. Insert new hose from under car into engine compartment. Ditto by evaporator. Connect at evaporator and start clamping hose back on underside starting at evaporator and work your way back to engine compartment. Pull up excess slack in engine compartment. Connect to compressor (if it had an o-ring fitting use a new o-ring). Snug up connections. Reattach splash pan in front. Inspect work. Replace receiver drier. Have system professionally evacuated, charged and tested. Advise ac tech to add 2 ounces of refrigerant oil. If R12 use mineral or ester. If converted to R134a in the past determine if it was PAG or ester. Be prepared to replace the other 4 hoses if you have not done so already. When lifting car with a lift or jack be sure you are NOT jacking up the hoses underneath, this one reason they get damaged. |
